High-Grade Rare Earths Surface Discovery

Lion Rock Minerals Limited (ASX:LRM) has announced a breakthrough at its Minta Rare Earth and Rutile Project in Cameroon, reporting high-grade rare earth element (REE) mineralisation starting right from surface. Laboratory assays from retained auger drill samples confirm multiple significant intervals of Total Rare Earth Oxides (TREO), with standout results including 2.3 metres at 4.54% TREO and a remarkable 0.3 metres grading 21.15% TREO within the saprolite layer. These grades are reported on an in-situ basis, marking a strong early indicator of a shallow, high-grade rare earth system open at depth.

Strategic Rare Earth Basket Composition

The rare earth mineralisation is notably magnet-rich, featuring neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) that comprise 21–24% of TREO in key intervals. These elements are vital for permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. The deposit also contains dysprosium and terbium (DyTb), heavy rare earths critical for maintaining magnet strength at high temperatures, which contribute 0.6–1.6% of TREO. Every rare earth element assayed, along with scandium, appears on the 2025 U.S. List of Critical Minerals, underscoring the strategic value of the discovery.

Extensive Drilling Campaign and Next Steps

Complementing these assay results, Lion Rock has completed a substantial 761-hole alluvial drilling campaign across approximately 50 kilometres, generating 3,666 samples. The first 638 samples are currently being processed, with results expected to be released in batches over the coming weeks. The auger drilling, however, has limitations in penetrating the saprolite layer, prompting the company to expedite mobilisation of diamond drilling to test the depth extent of the mineralisation.

CEO Theuns de Bruyn highlighted the transformational nature of this discovery, stating that the results represent a significant step change in both scale and strategic importance for the Minta Project. He emphasised the dual focus on rare earths and rutile, with the latter supported by a strategic relationship with Tronox. The company is also advancing mineralogical and petrological test work to better understand the mineralisation and recovery potential.

Technical Validation and Mineralogical Insights

The assays derive from a carefully curated retained sample program, with 90 valid full-suite ICP-OES assays covering 30 holes. Zero-cut-off whole-hole averaging reveals that eight of 15 continuously assayed holes average above 1.0% TREO over their full drilled depth, with mineralisation consistently starting at surface and extending through shallow profiles. Mineralogical studies including XRF, XRD, and QEMSCAN link the chemical assays to mineral hosts such as monazite, confirming the potential for beneficiation and product development.

The project’s mineralisation style is shallow and near-horizontal, typical of residual and alluvial heavy mineral systems, with vertical drilling providing unbiased sampling. The extensive QA/QC protocols and competent person sign-off by Chantelle Obermeyer support the reliability of the results.

This rare earth discovery adds a new dimension to Lion Rock’s existing rutile-focused portfolio, potentially positioning Minta as a world-class dual commodity project.
