Southern Cross Gold Drills 972 g/t Gold at 620m Depth, Expands Mineralization Eastward

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Southern Cross Gold’s latest drilling at Sunday Creek delivers a blistering 972 g/t gold hit at 620 metres depth and pushes high-grade gold-antimony veins closer to surface and further east than ever before.

  • 0.6 m at 972 g/t gold and 8.9% antimony at 620 m depth
  • Apollo East veins extended up-dip and along 140 m strike
  • High antimony grades accompany shallow gold mineralization
  • Eleven rigs active in 200,000 m drill program through Q1 2027
  • Project positioned as a critical Western antimony supplier

Record-Grade Gold Intersection Deepens Apollo Vein System

Southern Cross Gold Consolidated Ltd (ASX:SX2) has drilled what ranks as its ninth-best intersection ever at its Sunday Creek Gold-Antimony Project in Victoria, Australia, with a staggering 0.6 metres grading 972 g/t gold and 8.9% antimony at 620 metres vertical depth. This intercept, from drill hole SDDSC222W1, extends the Apollo A130 vein set 40 metres deeper than previously known, confirming that grades continue to strengthen with depth rather than tapering off.

Such ultra-high-grade results underline the project's potential to host a significant underground gold-antimony resource. Visible gold was observed throughout the quartz-stibnite vein, adding tangible proof to the assay numbers.

Apollo East Mineralization Surges Closer to Surface and Eastward

Meanwhile, the Apollo East corridor is proving to be a broad, multi-vein system, now defined over 140 metres of horizontal strike. Drill holes SDDSC223 and SDDSC227 have pushed the shallowest high-grade gold-antimony mineralization yet at Apollo East, with assays including 5.1 metres at 27.2 g/t gold equivalent (18.4 g/t gold, 3.7% antimony) from just 260.9 metres depth, and individual gold assays as high as 186 g/t and 116 g/t.

SDDSC227 also delivered the easternmost significant mineralized intersection drilled at Sunday Creek to date, approximately 110 metres below surface, extending mineralization beneath trenches sampled in 2021. The antimony content here is notable, with one assay hitting 32.5% Sb, underscoring the critical metal value alongside gold.

Expanding High-Grade Vein Sets Across Multiple Prospects

SDDSC222 intersected seven separate Apollo East vein sets, extending several of them 40 to 70 metres up-dip. The hole also returned multiple assays exceeding 15% antimony, peaking at 26.2% Sb with accompanying gold grades. This broad mineralized zone averages 1.6 g/t gold equivalent over 118 metres, with a higher-grade core of 39.3 metres at 3.3 g/t AuEq.

These results build on the company's aggressive exploration strategy, with eleven rigs currently turning and a 200,000-metre drill program running through to early 2027. Pending results from 72 holes promise to further refine the geological model and resource potential.

Strategic Critical Mineral Potential and Metallurgical Promise

Sunday Creek is an epizonal gold-antimony deposit located within a tier-one jurisdiction, with mineralization hosted in a "Golden Ladder" structure of stacked vein sets extending from surface to over 1,200 metres depth. The project's dual-metal profile is increasingly valuable given global antimony supply constraints, with China controlling over half of mined supplies.

Southern Cross Gold's metallurgical testing has demonstrated high recoveries of both gold (93-98%) and antimony, with non-refractory mineralization amenable to conventional processing. The company is positioning Sunday Creek as a potential key Western supplier of antimony, a critical metal for defence, semiconductors, and energy transition technologies.

President & CEO Michael Hudson emphasised the simultaneous growth of the Apollo and Apollo East zones, noting, "Grades keep improving with depth at Sunday Creek rather than tailing off, but they are not absent at surface either."

What Comes Next for Southern Cross Gold?

With a solid cash position, strategic freehold land ownership, and a large-scale drill program underway, Southern Cross Gold is on track to deliver further milestone results. However, the true scale and economic viability of the Sunday Creek deposit remain to be seen as ongoing drilling and metallurgical studies progress.

Investors will be watching closely as the company continues to push mineralization boundaries eastward and downward, while refining its critical minerals strategy amid tightening global supply chains.

Bottom Line?

Southern Cross Gold’s latest drill results deepen and broaden Sunday Creek’s gold-antimony system, reinforcing its potential as a strategic critical minerals asset.

Questions in the middle?

  • How will pending results from 72 holes reshape the geological model and resource estimates?
  • What impact will ongoing metallurgical testing have on processing strategies and project economics?
  • Can Southern Cross Gold leverage its strategic freehold land and critical mineral positioning to attract partnerships or off-take agreements?
