Javelin Minerals has launched a significant diamond drilling campaign targeting two major deep gold-copper anomalies at its Coogee Project in WA, supported by WA Government funding.
- Diamond drilling started at Coogee North and West
- Drilling targets deep magnetic anomalies up to 1,000m
- WA Government Exploration Incentive Scheme co-funds program
- Coogee Project hosts 127,000oz gold and 4,122t copper JORC Resource
- Drilling aims to identify source of mineralisation beneath historic shallow zones
Deep Drilling Targets Untapped Gold-Copper Anomalies
Javelin Minerals (ASX:JAV) has kicked off a 5-6 week diamond drilling program at its Coogee Gold Project in Western Australia, aiming to unlock the source of two major gold-copper intrusive targets. The program commenced on 2 September, with a diamond rig now drilling deep holes at Coogee North and Coogee West, each planned to reach between 800 and 1,000 metres.
These targets are defined by large-scale magnetic anomalies that have never before been tested at depth. Notably, the Coogee North anomaly lies directly beneath the bulk of the existing gold-copper Mineral Resource, presenting a compelling opportunity to explore the roots of known mineralisation. Historic drilling has only scratched the surface, with previous holes limited to shallow depths and leaving the magnetic sources unprobed.
Government Co-Funding Enables Ambitious Exploration
The drilling program is co-funded through the Western Australian Government’s Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS), a partnership that has enabled Javelin to pursue these ambitious and costly deep diamond holes. Westralian Diamond Drilling of Kalgoorlie is conducting the work, reflecting a local collaboration on this technically challenging campaign.
Mark Cossom, Javelin’s General Manager of Resources and Exploration, highlighted the significance: “It’s great to finally be underway with the drilling of these two ambitious holes. The magnetic response is consistent with alteration minerals associated with gold-copper mineralisation at Coogee North, and there is extensive near-surface anomalism at both targets. This program gives us a chance to test the conceptual targets with diamond drilling, which is a critical step forward.”
Coogee Project’s Growing Resource Base
As of July 2024, the Coogee Gold Project boasts a JORC Mineral Resource of approximately 3.6 million tonnes grading 1.08 g/t gold for 127,000 ounces, alongside a copper resource of about 1.0 million tonnes at 0.41% copper, containing 4,122 tonnes of copper. These figures reflect a significant gold-copper endowment in a granted mining lease area roughly 55 kilometres southeast of Kalgoorlie.
The updated resource estimate shows growth since 2022, with fresh primary zones contributing the bulk of the contained metal. The ongoing drilling program aims to test whether the deep magnetic anomalies represent extensions or new zones of mineralisation that could materially enhance the project’s resource profile.
What Lies Beneath Remains to Be Seen
While the targets are described as conceptual, the geophysical and geochemical signatures provide a strong rationale to explore deeper. The magnetic anomalies are interpreted to relate to magnetite-rich alteration zones, often associated with gold-copper mineral systems. However, no previous drilling has penetrated these deep targets, leaving a crucial gap in the understanding of the Coogee mineral system.
The results of this drilling program will be pivotal in confirming whether these magnetic bodies host economic mineralisation at depth. Positive outcomes could significantly shift the project’s valuation and development prospects. Investors will be watching closely as assay results emerge in the coming months, potentially setting the stage for follow-up drilling and resource updates.
Bottom Line?
Javelin’s deep drilling at Coogee marks a critical test of unproven but promising targets that could reshape the project’s resource potential if assays confirm significant mineralisation.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the deep magnetic anomalies at Coogee North and West reveal new zones of high-grade gold-copper mineralisation?
- How might positive drilling results affect Javelin’s development timeline and financing needs for Coogee?
- Could further government funding be secured to extend exploration if initial results validate these conceptual targets?
