Macarthur Minerals (ASX:MIO) has secured an additional Programme of Work (PoW) approval from the Western Australian Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration for bulk sampling activities at its 100% owned Lake Giles Hematite Project. This latest regulatory nod expands on an earlier PoW granted in April 2026, allowing Macarthur and its partners to explore further areas within the Ularring Hematite region.
The bulk sampling program is designed to deepen understanding of the hematite ore’s quality, test beneficiation techniques through comminution, and evaluate blending potential with iron ore from Gold Valley Yilgarn’s Wiluna West Project. These steps are critical for refining the project’s development pathway and potential market positioning.
Joint Venture Partnership Bolsters Operational Capability
Key to advancing these activities is Destec Contracting, which will undertake the bulk sampling under a joint venture arrangement with Gold Valley Yilgarn. Both Gold Valley and Destec now hold equal 50% interests in the relevant rights under the Principal Agreement, following a deed of assignment approved earlier this year. Destec’s existing workforce, mobile crushing equipment, and comminution expertise complement Gold Valley’s iron ore strategy, enhancing the operational framework at Lake Giles.
Macarthur retains full ownership of the tenements and project assets, while leveraging the combined strengths of its partners to progress the hematite component. Executive Chairman Cameron McCall highlighted the significance of this approval, noting that access through the Esperance port, currently a bottleneck, may improve with Gold Valley’s iron ore shipments, potentially opening export pathways for Macarthur’s hematite material.
Strategic Importance of Bulk Sampling and Resource Assessment
The Ularring Hematite Mineral Resource comprises 54.5 million tonnes of Indicated Resources at 47.2% Fe and 26 million tonnes of Inferred Resources at 45.4% Fe. The bulk sampling program will provide vital data on product quality and beneficiation options, informing future development decisions. While the PoW approval is a regulatory prerequisite, it does not signify the start of mining or confirm economic viability.
Destec’s Steve Wyatt explained that their review of block models across the Snark, Drabble Downs, and Central Regions has identified key areas for sampling, with plans underway to mobilise mining and crushing equipment subject to operational and approval conditions. The mobile crushing unit, designed for on-site processing, is a critical asset for this phase.

Alongside the hematite project, Macarthur continues to focus on its large-scale Lake Giles Moonshine Magnetite Project, aiming to unlock value across its extensive iron ore portfolio. The company’s broader Lake Giles Iron Project also includes substantial magnetite resources, underscoring its strategic position in Western Australia’s iron ore sector.
