Goldfields Project Hits Major Milestone with Construction Start

Brightstar Resources Limited (ASX:BTR) has taken a decisive step forward in its transformation from explorer to producer, with full-scale construction underway on its flagship Goldfields Project in Western Australia. Following the Board’s Final Investment Decision in May 2026 and securing all key regulatory approvals, Brightstar has awarded a A$110 million EPC contract to GR Engineering Services for a 1.5Mtpa processing plant at Laverton. The company is targeting first gold production by mid-2027, aiming to deliver more than 75,000 ounces annually over an initial six-year mine life.

The updated Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS 2.0), released in January 2026, underpins this development with robust economics: a pre-tax free cash flow of A$1.0 billion, net present value (NPV8) of A$606 million, and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 74% at a conservative gold price of A$6,000 per ounce. These figures reflect a significant upgrade from the prior DFS, driven by an expanded processing throughput and increased Ore Reserves.

Sandstone Hub Consolidation and Resource Growth

Parallel to Goldfields, Brightstar has advanced its Sandstone Project, completing the strategic acquisition of Aurumin Limited in December 2025. This consolidation has lifted the Sandstone Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) to 2.9 million ounces at 1.3 g/t gold, with an 18% increase in total resource size and a 113% jump in Indicated resources, enhancing the project's development potential.

Intensive drilling campaigns, including maiden diamond drilling at Sandstone, have yielded spectacular results, notably a 305.4-meter intercept at 1.82 g/t gold at Two Mile Hill-Shillington, tripling the interpreted thickness of the mineralised tonalite intrusion. These results feed into the ongoing Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS), on track for completion in December 2026 alongside the maiden Ore Reserve declaration, setting the stage for a potential second cornerstone production centre.

Strong Financial Position and Capital Raising Success

Brightstar’s FY26 financial results reflect its transition phase, reporting a net loss of A$76.93 million, primarily driven by exploration and development expenditures. However, the company significantly strengthened its balance sheet, ending the year with cash and restricted cash totaling A$283 million, up from A$11.7 million the prior year.

This liquidity boost follows a successful capital raising campaign comprising a A$175 million institutional placement, an upsized A$18 million Share Purchase Plan, and a US$120 million senior secured Nordic Bond with a 12.5% coupon and four-year tenor. Together, these initiatives provide over A$380 million in available funding, fully financing Goldfields to first gold and advancing Sandstone towards a Final Investment Decision.

Operational Highlights and Safety Excellence

During FY26, Brightstar safely mined 244.5kt of ore at 3.0 g/t gold from its Laverton underground operations, producing approximately 24,000 ounces of contained gold. The company maintained an impeccable safety record with no Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) across mining, exploration, and construction activities, extending an unbroken safety streak exceeding 2,098 days.

Mining at the Fish underground mine paused in March 2026 but remains in a state of operational readiness to resume in early 2027, coinciding with the Laverton plant commissioning. Meanwhile, Second Fortune mine is scheduled for care and maintenance from August 2026, with ore stockpiled for future processing.

Governance and Executive Remuneration Updates

The company continues to strengthen its governance framework amid growth, with a stable Board and key executive appointments enhancing project delivery and health, safety, and environmental leadership. Notably, Non-Executive Director Ashley Fraser resigned in December 2025.

Brightstar’s remuneration report reveals a 70% Short-Term Incentive (STI) outcome for executives, reflecting strong safety, reserve growth, and project advancement despite some cost and production challenges. No Long-Term Incentive (LTI) awards vested during the year, with planned executive remuneration increases of up to 18% for FY27 to align with market benchmarks.

Looking Ahead to a Transformational 2027

Brightstar’s immediate focus is the successful execution of the Laverton plant construction and delivery of first gold, alongside the commencement of open pit mining at Lord Byron and the resumption of stoping at Fish underground. The Sandstone PFS, maiden Ore Reserve, and resource updates are expected by December 2026, supporting a targeted Final Investment Decision in 2027.

With a fully funded development pipeline, a growing resource base of 4.5 million ounces across 100 million tonnes, and a clear strategy to become a multi-asset mid-tier gold producer in Western Australia, Brightstar is poised for significant growth. The company’s ability to navigate execution risks, maintain financial discipline, and capitalize on favourable gold market conditions will be critical to watch in the coming months.

Investors should keep an eye on project construction milestones, resource upgrade announcements, and the company’s progress toward commercial production as key indicators of Brightstar’s trajectory.

Bottom Line?

Brightstar’s transition to producer status hinges on timely Laverton plant commissioning and Sandstone development progress amid solid funding and resource growth.
