Botala Expands Serowe CBM Reach Ahead of Pitse Flow Test
Botala Energy has secured three wholly owned Botswana prospecting licences covering 1,812km², taking its Serowe CBM footprint beyond 6,000km². The expansion comes as the company prepares to flow-test Serowe-3.5B, while the new acreage remains an interpreted exploration opportunity rather than a booked resource.

New Licences Extend Serowe’s Northern Footprint
Botala Energy Ltd (ASX:BTE) has added 1,812km² to its Botswana exploration position, securing three 100%-owned prospecting licences around the Serowe Coal Bed Methane project. The grants take Botala’s broader Serowe footprint beyond 6,000km² and give it a much larger area over which to test and potentially expand the gas system being evaluated at the Pitse Pilot.
The most consequential licence is PL0089/2026, a 948.30km² block that directly adjoins the existing Serowe Mining Licence and Pitse development area. Botala’s internal geological mapping interprets the Serowe coal seam continuing north into PL0089, with thickness contours reaching approximately 14 to 16 metres in prospective sections.
Coal Thickness Still Requires Drilling Confirmation
That interpretation is potentially useful, but it is not yet a resource estimate. The company has not reported a Contingent Resource, Prospective Resource or Petroleum Reserve for any of the three new licences. Coal thickness alone does not establish gas content, permeability, deliverability, recoverability or commerciality, all of which will require further appraisal and production testing.
Botala has identified two priority exploration targets within PL0089 and plans to drill them in early 2027, subject to environmental approvals. The campaign is designed to test whether the geological characteristics seen at Pitse continue into the expanded acreage and whether the interpreted thickening trend survives contact with the drill bit.
Serowe-3.5B Flow Test Is the Nearer Catalyst
The immediate test remains at Pitse. Serowe-3.5B is undergoing final equipment checks ahead of its first flow test, with the company targeting commencement within approximately two weeks, subject to operational conditions. The well continues to build casing pressure during dewatering and was flared for about five hours on 1 September from an initial casing pressure of approximately 80 psi; a further flow test followed on 3 September.
Botala describes the pressure build-up between flaring events as an early positive indicator of gas charge, while also slowing dewatering as the water level approaches the top of the coal seams to reduce the risk of coal fines and proppant entering the pump. The flow test should provide a more meaningful read on reservoir performance than the licence interpretation alone. Separately, Botala has exited its 49% interest in the 4MW Phuti solar project for immaterial consideration, sharpening its stated focus on progressing and commercialising Serowe. The project has completed the conditions of its power purchase agreement with Botswana Power Corporation and can now commence construction under its local ownership consortium.

The acreage expands Botala’s potential scale, but the investment case still turns first on whether Serowe-3.5B can demonstrate sustained commercial flow and whether later drilling confirms PL0089’s interpreted thick coal trend.
