Canadian Phosphate Finds More Wapiti Seam and Expands Exploration

Canadian Phosphate has extended visually identified phosphate mineralisation at its Wapiti project in British Columbia to approximately 9km of strike. The company will spend more on exploration while deferring its Barnes bulk sample to 2027 and relying on lower-margin Montana inventory for near-term supply.

Wapiti Drilling Extends Phosphate Seam

Canadian Phosphate Limited (ASX:CP8) has extended visually identified phosphate mineralisation at its Wapiti Phosphate Project in British Columbia to approximately 9km of strike, strengthening the geological case for further work while leaving the most important question unanswered: what grades will the laboratory assays confirm?

The company has completed 18 diamond drillholes totalling 2,638 metres. Nine additional holes were drilled south of the Main Zone on the eastern limb of the Red Deer Syncline, with eight intersecting the visually identified phosphate-bearing horizon. One hole was abandoned before reaching its target because of thick overburden and drilling difficulties.

Those results are not yet assay results. CP8 says the 2026 intersections are based on visual logging, portable XRF and downhole gamma responses only. The company has not confirmed grades, mineralogy, continuity or true widths, and says laboratory assays are expected during the September 2026 quarter. Downhole gamma is described as a qualitative indicator rather than a direct measurement of phosphate.

Western Limb Becomes Next Exploration Target

With the eastern limb providing a longer geological framework, exploration has now shifted to the western limb. Hole WP26-018 intersected the Main Zone there, while historical drilling will be used to guide the first phase of new targeting. CP8 says the additional information has improved its understanding of the deposit’s structure, geometry and seam continuity, but the true thickness of the mineralisation remains undefined.

The company will allocate additional funds to Wapiti beyond its previously announced 3,000-metre program. The expanded work is intended to support geological understanding and Mineral Resource growth potential, alongside field mapping, sampling and a high-resolution LiDAR and orthoimagery survey. The LiDAR dataset is expected to support future geological, engineering and environmental studies, while the imagery and fieldwork will help refine drill targets.

Barnes Bulk Sample Deferred to 2027

The exploration push comes with a trade-off in the company’s near-term operating plan. CP8 has postponed extraction of the Barnes bulk sample until Q2 2027 and instead plans to use approximately 30,000 tonnes of previously mined phosphate rock held in Montana to meet customer requirements.

That inventory provides supply without the capital expenditure associated with extracting Barnes, but CP8 expects it to generate a lower gross margin than future Canadian-mined product. The company says the revised timing also gives customers more time to move from commissioning into continuous operations, which it expects could produce larger and more consistent demand. Whether that anticipated demand develops at the pace assumed will sit alongside the assay results as a key test of the expanded Wapiti strategy.

The geological footprint is growing, but the investment case still turns on assay-confirmed grade, true thickness and whether the expanded drilling can translate into a larger, higher-confidence resource without stretching near-term margins.
