Cosmo finds high-grade copper signal on newly granted Carters Road licence
Cosmo Metals has secured a new exploration licence in New South Wales after reconnaissance work found copper-bearing outcrop and a selective rock chip sample grading 4.69% copper. The result is an early exploration signal, not evidence of a defined deposit, with mapping and further sampling still to come.

A single rock chip has given Cosmo Metals Ltd (ASX:CMO) a high-grade copper lead as it expands its New England Orogen portfolio. The selective reconnaissance sample from the newly granted Carters Road exploration licence returned 4.69% copper and 5.78 grams per tonne silver.
That number is attention-grabbing, but its limitations are equally important. The sample was collected from outcrop or subcrop using a geopick and block hammer, and was specifically selected to characterise visible mineralisation and alteration. Cosmo cautions that it may not represent the bulk grade of in-situ mineralisation, particularly at depth.
New Licence Extends Cosmo’s New England Copper Footprint
Exploration Licence EL9946 covers Carters Road in southern New South Wales, about 40 kilometres southeast of Cosmo’s Nundle Project and 40 kilometres northwest of Gloucester. The ground sits beside the regional Peel-Manning Fault complex, where a major east-west offset brings distinct geological terranes together.
Initial field mapping identified more than one kilometre of prospective Permian-aged Tonalite within Tamworth Group volcanics. The copper-bearing sequence lies next to a serpentinite unit associated with the fault system, a geological setting Cosmo regards as prospective for intrusion-related copper-gold mineralisation.
Mt Morgan Analogy Remains a Targeting Concept
Cosmo’s technical team is targeting a mineralisation style comparable to the historic Mt Morgan mine in Queensland’s New England Orogen. Mt Morgan recorded production of 7.7 million ounces of gold and 361,000 tonnes of copper between 1884 and 1981, but the company’s announcement makes clear that the comparison is geological context only and does not establish a discovery or resource at Carters Road.
Carters Road has no known historic workings and no drilling has been completed on the licence. The company’s next phase is therefore exploratory rather than developmental: compiling open-file historical information, reviewing geological and geophysical data, securing approvals, and then using mapping and additional rock-chip sampling to test the mineralisation trend along the Tonalite and Peel-Manning Fault.
The immediate question is whether the 4.69% copper result marks a broader, repeatable system or an isolated high-grade fragment. Cosmo says follow-up fieldwork will be used to identify the controls on mineralisation; evidence of continuity, supported by systematic sampling or geophysics and eventually drilling, will determine whether Carters Road becomes more than a promising addition to the map.
