True North Copper expands Cloncurry resource base with Mongoose-Taipan consolidation
True North Copper has lifted the contained copper inventory across its Cloncurry Copper Project by approximately 18% through a larger Mongoose-Taipan resource. The update gives the late-2026 pre-feasibility study a bigger technical base, but it remains a mineral resource rather than an economic reserve.
- Mongoose-Taipan resource rises to 11.2Mt at 0.76% CuEq
- Contained copper increases approximately 49% at the combined deposit
- Cloncurry project contained copper resource grows approximately 18%
- Update incorporates 2024 Renegade and three 2026 TNC drillholes
- Pre-feasibility study and potential Ore Reserve remain targeted for late 2026
Mongoose-Taipan resource adds scale to Cloncurry
True North Copper Limited (ASX:TNC) has increased the contained copper resource across its Cloncurry Copper Project by approximately 18%, with the Mongoose-Taipan deposits now being treated as one continuous mineralised system.
The consolidated estimate stands at 11.2 million tonnes grading 0.76% copper equivalent, containing 70,000 tonnes of copper, 47,000 ounces of gold and 85,000 tonnes of copper equivalent. At Mongoose-Taipan itself, contained copper has risen by approximately 49% from the previously reported combined inventory, while resource tonnes have increased by roughly 35%.
Drilling and geological modelling drive the increase
The estimate adds five Renegade Exploration drillholes completed in 2024 and three True North holes drilled in 2026. True North said the deposits were previously assessed separately because of a tenement boundary; the new model removes that constraint and evaluates them as a single mineralised system.
Recent Taipan drilling included a 58.97-metre intersection grading 0.71% copper and 0.11 grams per tonne gold, including 3.97 metres at 3.79% copper and 0.47 grams per tonne gold. Another hole returned 38 metres at 0.75% copper and 0.08 grams per tonne gold. These are downhole widths, not estimated true widths, and the company noted that some intersections remain limited by metallurgical sampling.
Resource confidence remains split between Indicated and Inferred
Of the 11.2Mt estimate, 5.95Mt is classified as Indicated and 5.25Mt as Inferred under the JORC Code 2012. That split matters: the larger consolidated figure improves the project’s technical foundation, but nearly half of the tonnes still carry the lower confidence classification.
The estimate uses a 0.40% CuEq cut-off and a copper-equivalent formula based on assumed copper and gold prices of US$5.80 per pound and US$4,470 per ounce, alongside stated metallurgical recoveries. Those assumptions are inputs to the resource calculation, not a project valuation or production forecast.
Late-2026 study is the next decisive test
True North plans to incorporate the updated resource into mine design, scheduling and development optimisation for the Cloncurry Copper Project pre-feasibility study, which it says remains on track for late 2026. The company is also targeting a potential Ore Reserve, further infill drilling to improve resource classification and extension work around Mongoose-Taipan.
The filing does not disclose a mine plan, capital cost, operating cost, production profile or economic return. A conceptual open pit shown in the announcement is expressly not a reserve and is not supported by economic analysis. The resource is therefore a stronger input into the study, rather than evidence that a commercially viable development has been established.
Bottom Line?
The resource growth improves the scale of Cloncurry, but the investment case now turns on whether the late-2026 study can convert geological scale into an economically workable mine plan.
Questions in the middle?
- How much of the Inferred Mongoose-Taipan material can be converted to Indicated or Ore Reserve status through infill drilling?
- What mine design, processing route and capital requirements will emerge from the pre-feasibility study?
- How will the CuEq assumptions and metallurgical test work affect the resource available for development?
