A$4.4m loss and A$4.1m cash shape Zinc of Ireland’s technology push

Zinc of Ireland has transformed from a small Irish zinc explorer into a metals technology developer, acquiring Meclex, raising A$5.5 million and advancing ARGO and VOLTA. The opportunity is substantial, but both technologies remain uncommercialised and the VOLTA partnership requires formal renewal.

Zinc of Ireland Limited (ASX:ZMI) is betting that its future lies as much in processing technology as in the ground. The company’s 2026 annual report details the acquisition of Metallon Clean Extractions BV, or Meclex, and the push to commercialise its ARGO zinc residue technology and VOLTA lead-acid battery recycling process, while continuing exploration at the Kildare project in Ireland.

ARGO testing points towards pilot development

ARGO remains in development, but recent laboratory-scale testing on zinc leach residues from three European smelters produced recoveries of up to 99% for silver, 100% for lead and 91% for copper. The company says critical-mineral recovery testing for germanium, gallium and indium is still under way, with the flowsheet being advanced towards a pilot phase targeted for early 2027.

The technology is being developed with support from Nyrstar, which provides feedstock, industry expertise and testing facilities under a non-exclusive cooperation agreement. Zinc of Ireland also reported a €734,000 development grant from Belgian agency VLAIO, equivalent to approximately A$1.2 million, after year end. The company is modelling a potential full-scale circuit of more than 100,000 tonnes per year, although that work is still intended to provide design and engineering data rather than demonstrate commercial viability.

VOLTA moves directly to larger demonstration

VOLTA is further along the stated development pathway, at Technology Readiness Level 6, and has previously been tested by FIB, a company controlled by European battery recycler SERI Industrial. Zinc of Ireland and SERI now plan to bypass the smaller pilot stage and proceed to a larger commercial-scale demonstration plant beside SERI’s facility in Calitri, Italy. First commissioning is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to additional regulatory approvals.

That acceleration comes with a material qualification. The VOLTA Cooperation Agreement expired on 31 August 2026, although the parties continue working together and are discussing a formal extension. The arrangement is intended to give Zinc of Ireland access to demonstration infrastructure, engineering expertise and development funding, reducing the capital it would otherwise need to build the plant. Until the extension is formalised, however, the route to that demonstration remains less settled than the company’s licensing strategy suggests.

Kildare remains an exploration asset, not a mine

The company has not abandoned its original zinc story. It controls 17 prospecting licences covering 595 square kilometres and has started a planned 3,500-metre diamond drilling program at Kildare, targeting extensions and regional step-outs through the first quarter of calendar 2027. The company is also collecting material for analysis of germanium, gallium and indium, with a view to assessing how ARGO could be integrated into a future development scenario.

But the resource base has not changed: Kildare still contains an Inferred Mineral Resource of 11.3 million tonnes grading 9.0% combined zinc and lead. The annual report makes clear that Zinc of Ireland has reported no Ore Reserves, has made no sales and has not demonstrated the commercial viability of either its mineral deposits or its technologies. Mt Clere was fully impaired during the year, while the company withdrew from the Mt Clere earn-in and its Murchison tenement application.

Funding improved, dilution and cash burn remain visible

Zinc of Ireland raised A$5.5 million before costs through a placement of 550 million shares at A$0.01 each and ended June with A$4.1 million in cash, up from A$1.3 million a year earlier. The Meclex acquisition also added 153 million shares and a large package of performance rights, taking issued shares to 1.285 billion at year end from 582.0 million a year earlier.

The group reported a net loss of A$4.4 million, compared with A$1.8 million in 2025. The largest component was a non-cash share-based payment expense of A$3.0 million, but operating cash outflow also increased to A$1.27 million from A$399,000. The report identifies further funding as a material risk: advancing the technologies and developing Kildare will require substantial additional financing, while the company’s current cash balance must support several technically and commercially uncertain programs.

The next evidence will come in different forms: critical-mineral results and ARGO pilot progress, regulatory approvals and the status of the VOLTA agreement, and drilling data from Kildare. The central question is whether Zinc of Ireland can convert promising recovery percentages and a large inferred resource into repeatable, financeable commercial outcomes before its enlarged capital base demands another raise.

Zinc of Ireland now has a funded development program and encouraging early recovery data, but commercial-scale validation, formal renewal of the VOLTA arrangement and future funding remain the key tests.
