Caravel Minerals has delayed the Caravel Copper Project’s Definitive Feasibility Study from September to the fourth quarter of 2026. The extra time will fund further metallurgical testing, groundwater modelling, environmental updates and a detailed review of the process plant capital estimate.
- DFS moved from September to Q4 2026
- Eight-week programme targets higher concentrate grade and recovery
- Groundwater modelling to support DWER and EPA processes
- Process plant capital estimate under detailed company review
- Funding and joint venture discussions to follow DFS release
Caravel resets the DFS timetable
Caravel Minerals Limited (ASX:CVV) has pushed the definitive feasibility study for its 100%-owned Caravel Copper Project into the fourth quarter of calendar 2026, abandoning the September release window previously advised. The company has not provided a specific release date, meaning a key development milestone now sits later than expected.
The delay is being presented as a quality-control exercise rather than a change to the project’s stated development plan. Caravel says the additional work is intended to strengthen the study it will take to prospective funders and joint venture partners, although the announcement provides no updated project economics, capital cost figure or financing terms.
Metallurgy gets another eight weeks
An approximately eight-week metallurgical testwork programme is already under way. Its objectives are to improve the copper concentrate grade and copper recovery reported in the DFS, generate enough copper and molybdenum concentrate for product marketing, and re-assay earlier samples to confirm gold and silver recoveries now reported in the Ore Reserve.
That work could give Caravel a more complete product package for offtake discussions, but the results are not yet available. Until the programme is finished, the company’s claims about improved grade and recovery remain objectives rather than outcomes.
Water and approvals move closer to formal testing
Caravel will also complete numerical groundwater modelling of the Yarragadee and Leederville aquifers. The modelling is intended to support the final hydrogeological report for the Gillingarra borefield and DWER’s acceptance of the company’s water extraction strategy. Caravel says this would allow the DFS to present its water position on modelled rather than indicative grounds, while groundwater licence applications remain under consideration.
The Environmental Review Document is substantially complete but will be updated with recent survey results and water supply modelling before submission to the Environmental Protection Authority ahead of a Public Environmental Review. Caravel expects a complete document to help the approvals process, though the announcement does not give a revised timetable for EPA finalisation or ministerial consent.
Capital estimate under company scrutiny
Primero Group has delivered the process plant capital cost estimate, which Caravel is now reviewing in detail. That review covers the estimate’s basis, material quantities, rates, productivity assumptions and proposed delivery model. The company says it wants to satisfy itself on the estimate before including it in the DFS, a potentially important test of the project’s economic case for external capital providers.
Once the DFS is released, Caravel plans to shift toward project funding and joint venture partnering, alongside front-end engineering and design, operational readiness and completion of the environmental approvals process. The company continues to target a Final Investment Decision by the end of 2027. The next test is whether the extra weeks produce a stronger study without pushing that target further out.
Bottom Line?
The Q4 DFS will need to show whether the additional testing and cost review have materially improved project certainty, not merely extended the timetable.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the additional metallurgical work deliver higher recoveries and marketable copper and molybdenum products?
- What capital cost and project economics will emerge from the Primero estimate review?
- Can groundwater, EPA and DWER milestones be completed without moving the targeted end-2027 Final Investment Decision?
