Firebird takes first practical step toward Australian manganese production

Battery Materials By Victor Sage 3 min read

Firebird Metals has prepared the first manganese feedstock for its Australian Demonstration Plant, marking a practical step towards testing its integrated pathway from Western Australian ore to battery materials. Equipment remains scheduled to arrive in October, with commissioning targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026.

  • First Oakover manganese feedstock prepared for demonstration-scale processing
  • Representative sample sent to Hunan for October technical program
  • ADP equipment expected at Fremantle Port in early October
  • Commissioning remains targeted for Q4 2026
  • Initial sample production targeted for Q1 2027

Oakover Ore Becomes First ADP Feedstock

Firebird Metals (ASX:FRB) has prepared the first manganese feedstock for its Australian Demonstration Plant, turning ore from the 100%-owned Oakover Manganese Project in Western Australia into material ready for demonstration-scale testwork. The milestone is operational rather than commercial: Firebird has not yet reported production from the plant, but it has completed a necessary preparation stage ahead of commissioning.

The ore was crushed, wet-milled, screened, dried and homogenised to produce a consistent particle-size distribution. That feedstock is intended to test Firebird’s integrated process from manganese ore through to high-purity manganese chemicals and advanced battery materials at the company’s Osborne Park facility.

Hunan Program to Support Australian Commissioning

A representative subsample has been airfreighted to Firebird’s pilot plant and research facility in Hunan, China, for an October 2026 technical program involving Australian Technical Lead Dr Chris Passmore. The work will focus on process demonstration, technical knowledge transfer and the transfer of operating expertise to the Australian plant.

The timing is tied to the physical delivery of the ADP itself. Firebird says the first container of equipment has departed China and is expected to reach Fremantle Port in early October, while final site-readiness activities at Osborne Park are nearing completion. Assembly, installation and commissioning remain scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with initial sample production targeted for the first quarter of 2027.

Project Economics Remain Historical Estimates

Firebird continues to cite an 18-year mine life for Oakover, alongside a previously reported net present value of A$741 million and internal rate of return of 73%. Those figures come from the company’s 30 August 2023 announcement and are not a new economic study in this filing; Firebird says the material assumptions underpinning the forecast information have not materially changed.

The next test is therefore straightforward but consequential: whether the prepared feedstock can move through demonstration-scale processing as planned, and whether the equipment arrival and site work keep the commissioning timetable intact. Until sample production begins, the announcement remains evidence of project execution rather than proof of commercial-scale output.

Bottom Line?

The feedstock milestone reduces one practical hurdle, but the more revealing checkpoints are equipment arrival, commissioning and the first samples targeted for Q1 2027.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the ADP equipment arrive at Fremantle and move into commissioning on the stated Q4 2026 schedule?
  • What process performance will the October Hunan program demonstrate using Oakover feedstock?
  • Will initial 2027 samples validate the pathway to high-purity manganese chemicals and battery materials at demonstration scale?
