Marmota extends Greenewood drilling as first assays near

Mining By Maxwell Dee 3 min read

Marmota has expanded drilling across its Greenewood and Mainwood gold targets after intersecting geology resembling earlier favourable zones. With 313 holes now completed, the first assays are expected next week, although the announcement contains no new grades or quantified mineralisation.

Drilling expands ahead of first assays

Marmota Limited (ASX:MEU) has extended its Greenewood gold drilling campaign in South Australia after reporting favourable geology in both northern extensions and the southern Mainwood zone. The company now expects drilling to continue into early October, with first assays due as early as next week.

The scale of the campaign is becoming clearer. As at 23 September, Marmota had drilled 313 new holes: 110 at Greenewood and 203 at Mainwood. The company says the latest geology is “almost identical” to zones associated with earlier outstanding gold intersections, but this update does not provide new assay grades, widths or a resource estimate.

Mainwood carries the southern expansion case

Mainwood is the southern extension of Greenewood and is being tested in Marmota’s maiden drilling program there. The company is targeting a potentially contiguous high-grade zone, while also filling gaps and increasing drilling density to support an indicated resource for a scoping study.

Greenewood and Mainwood together have the potential to extend mineralisation over more than 2km of strike, according to Marmota. The target sits within the Golden Moon joint venture, in which Marmota holds a 90% interest, around 35km north-west of its wholly owned Aurora Tank gold deposit and about 30km north-east of the Challenger Gold Mine.

A stream of results will replace the waiting game

Marmota normally waits until a drilling program is complete before reporting assays, arguing that partial results can be misleading. This time, the size of the campaign means results are expected to arrive in a series over the coming weeks as laboratory work is processed for each zone. The company says it is prioritising the assays through the laboratory.

That timetable creates a near-term run of potential market catalysts, but it also leaves the central question unresolved: whether the favourable geology translates into a sufficiently continuous and economic body of gold mineralisation. The next assay release will provide the first fresh evidence; the later resource and scoping-study work will need to establish how much of that evidence holds together at scale.

Bottom Line?

The next few weeks should move Greenewood from geological promise toward measurable evidence, but the investment case still depends on assay continuity and any eventual resource definition.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the first assays confirm mineralisation across the expanded Greenewood and Mainwood zones?
  • Can Mainwood establish a contiguous high-grade zone rather than a series of isolated intersections?
  • How will the new drilling feed into the emerging resource estimate and maiden scoping study?
