Aquifers identified across all three targets
PTR Minerals Limited (ASX:PTR) has found water-bearing aquifers at all three paleochannel targets tested around the Rosewood Titanium Project in South Australia. The result removes one obvious uncertainty from a proposed mining and processing operation that is expected to rely on water for its gravity-based flowsheet.
The four-week hydrogeological program targeted sand and gravel sequences interpreted from remote sensing and historical exploration drilling. PTR says the results validate its targeting method and improve the prospects of finding processing water close to the planned mining area. Cased test and observation wells have been installed at two locations, while five additional shallow monitoring wells were established across the Rosewood Deposit for environmental baseline work.
Water supply still requires testing
The announcement is an encouraging geological result, rather than a completed water-supply assessment. PTR has not reported aquifer yields, water quality or pumping results. It plans to use geophysical surveys, including passive seismic work, to model the aquifers before undertaking further drilling and test pumping to assess long-term supply sustainability.
That distinction matters for a project still moving through development studies. Water is now present at each tested target, but the company must still establish whether the aquifers can provide the required volume and quality over the life of a potential operation. The monitoring wells are intended to support environmental approvals and a planned Mining Lease application.
Heritage clearance opens next drilling phase
A Native Title Heritage Survey completed with the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation has cleared land for future JORC Measured Resource infill drilling at Rosewood. It also clears access for regional exploration across brownfields and greenfields targets within the broader Muckanippie Project, expanding the work that can proceed beyond the immediate water program.
Meanwhile, PTR says the principal technical workstreams for its Rosewood scoping study are substantially complete, with optimisation, engineering review and financial modelling still in progress. The company has released an initial trial product sample to potential customers, with further samples scheduled for evaluation. Feedback is expected to inform the processing flowsheet, possible market applications and eventual product specifications.
The next meaningful tests are therefore practical ones: whether pumping confirms a sustainable supply, whether customer evaluations support the proposed product pathway, and how infill drilling affects the resource picture. PTR cautions that no new exploration results are reported in this announcement, leaving the water discovery as an important project step but not yet evidence of a mine-ready supply system.
