Paradigm Cash Position Faces Pressure as Phase 3 Assessment Delays Clarity

Paradigm will return the US$2 million drawn from Obsidian earlier this month and cancel the associated convertible notes, without an additional payment. The decision comes as the biotechnology company reviews interim data from its pivotal knee osteoarthritis trial and prepares a separate update on funding and operations.

  • US$2 million Tranche 4 drawdown to be returned to Obsidian
  • 2 million convertible notes cancelled with no premium or fee
  • Interim PARA_OA_012 Phase 3 analysis remains under review
  • Available cash and funds owed to Obsidian will both decrease
  • ASX securities remain in voluntary suspension pending a separate announcement

US$2 Million Drawdown Reversed

Paradigm Biopharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:PAR) is reversing a US$2 million financing drawdown just as uncertainty around its lead clinical program deepens. The company has agreed with Obsidian Global GP, LLC to return the funds received under the Tranche 4 drawdown announced on 11 September, while cancelling the 2 million convertible notes issued alongside it.

Paradigm said no premium, redemption amount, fee or other additional payment will be payable. The arrangement therefore removes both the cash received in September and the related notes outstanding to Obsidian, although the immediate effect is a reduction in the company’s available cash.

Interim Trial Review Is Incomplete

The repayment comes while Paradigm assesses an interim analysis from PARA_OA_012, its Phase 3 trial of injectable pentosan polysulfate sodium, or iPPS, in knee osteoarthritis. The company has not disclosed the analysis results or stated whether they are favourable or unfavourable.

Designated unblinded members of Paradigm’s team are reviewing the trial data to develop a more detailed understanding of the findings and their implications for the clinical development program. That assessment is still under way, leaving the program’s next steps and future funding requirements unresolved.

Funding Announcement Still Pending

The company said the return of the funds is not the separate announcement on funding arrangements and future operations referred to on 23 September. Paradigm’s securities therefore remain in voluntary suspension from ASX quotation, with that further announcement still to come.

The next disclosure will need to clarify how the interim analysis affects the development program, how much cash remains available after the repayment and what activities can be funded while the review continues. Until then, the company has offered no settled timetable for the clinical program or its financing needs.

Bottom Line?

The repayment removes near-term funding at a moment when Paradigm’s trial assessment and operating plan remain unsettled; the pending funding announcement is the next material test.

Questions in the middle?

  • What did the PARA_OA_012 interim analysis show, and could it alter the trial’s development path?
  • How much cash will Paradigm have available after returning the US$2 million?
  • What funding structure and operating plan will the company disclose before trading resumes?
