Magmatic’s Weebo drilling sharpens a gold-focused exploration strategy
Magmatic Resources has used FY2026 to turn the newly acquired Weebo Gold Project into its main exploration engine, while Fortescue-funded drilling continued to test copper-gold targets at Myall. The company ended the year with $5.54 million in cash, but a larger annual loss and continued exploration spending keep execution and funding firmly in focus.
- Multiple gold-bearing lodes identified across Weebo prospects
- 6,591 metres of Phase 3 drilling completed at Weebo
- Fortescue-funded Myall drilling extended copper-gold targets
- $3 million placement lifted cash to $5.54 million
- FY2026 net loss widened to $4.48 million
Weebo Becomes Magmatic’s Exploration Centrepiece
Magmatic Resources Limited (ASX:MAG) has made the 270-square-kilometre Weebo Gold Project its clear exploration priority, with drilling across the Yandal Greenstone Belt identifying gold-bearing structures at Ockerburry, Scone Stone, Otto 2 and several earlier-stage prospects. The project covers about 80 kilometres of strike and sits among the Darlot, Agnew-Lawlers, Bellevue, Bronzewing and Thunderbox gold operations.
The strongest results were spread across multiple targets rather than concentrated in a single hole. At Scone Stone, Phase 3 drilling returned 6 metres at 3.4 grams per tonne of gold, including 1 metre at 13.9g/t. Otto 2 follow-up holes returned 6 metres at 1.96g/t and a separate 3-metre interval at 3.67g/t, while Ockerburry 3 returned 8 metres at 1.52g/t. These are exploration intercepts, not resource estimates, but the company said the mineralised lodes remain open in directions that support further drilling.
Across the three phases, Magmatic completed roughly 8,875 metres of RC drilling and 10,433 metres of air-core drilling at Weebo. Air-core work also outlined three gold anomalies at West Gold, each extending more than 700 metres of strike, while first-pass drilling at Wheel of Fortune and Sholl’s Find confirmed anomalous gold associated with interpreted geological structures.
September Drilling Tests Continuity
The next step is less about adding another isolated intercept than testing whether the mineralisation hangs together. After year-end, Magmatic drilled Otto 2 to assess lateral continuity, tested depth extensions at Ockerburry 3 and began maiden RC drilling at Scone Stone West. Results from that work could help determine which of Weebo’s targets warrant more systematic follow-up and eventual resource definition.
Fortescue Keeps Myall Moving
Weebo is not the whole portfolio. At the Myall Copper-Gold Project in New South Wales, Fortescue’s FMG Resources funded a 16-hole, 6,240.4-metre diamond campaign under a farm-in agreement that allows it to spend up to $14 million over six years for as much as a 75% interest. Drilling at Interceptor, Calais and Stingray returned copper-bearing intervals near the Corvette-Kingswood area, which hosts a maiden Inferred Mineral Resource of 110 million tonnes at 0.33% copper equivalent.
Magmatic said Fortescue had satisfied the minimum expenditure commitment by 30 June 2026 but had not issued notice to acquire its earned interest. The company remains operator during the initial earn-in period and receives a 10% operator fee. That arrangement provides exploration funding for Myall, while leaving the timing and structure of Fortescue’s next decision as an important variable for the project.
Cash Position Improves as Losses Widen
The balance sheet is better funded, although the income statement remains typical of an active explorer. Magmatic raised $3 million through a placement at 6.1 cents a share, taking cash and cash equivalents to $5.54 million at 30 June 2026 from $4.74 million a year earlier. Net cash used in operating activities nevertheless increased to $2.60 million, as exploration expenditure rose and corporate costs expanded.
The annual loss widened to $4.48 million from $2.17 million, while net assets fell to $6.75 million. Exploration and evaluation expenses reached $3.35 million after the Fortescue contribution, and the company also recorded a $120,200 impairment related to a Weebo prospecting licence. Magmatic held no debt arrangements, but its own risk disclosures acknowledge that further capital may be required if exploration programs continue at their current scope.
Bottom Line?
Weebo is producing a broader set of drill targets, but the investment case now depends on continuity, resource conversion and how far the cash balance can carry the next campaign.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the September drilling establish continuous mineralised zones at Otto 2, Ockerburry 3 or Scone Stone West?
- Can Magmatic convert Weebo’s scattered intercepts into a JORC-compliant resource of meaningful scale and grade?
- When will Fortescue decide whether to exercise its earned Myall interest, and what exploration funding follows?
