Lake Resources clears Kachi permit hurdle and begins detailed engineering

Lake Resources has secured the primary provincial environmental permit for its Kachi lithium project in Argentina, clearing the way for detailed engineering and financing work. The approval removes a major development hurdle, but FEED, funding, RIGI approval and a final investment decision remain ahead.

  • Catamarca issues Kachi Environmental Impact Declaration
  • Project advances to Front-End Engineering Design
  • 200-metre lagoon exclusion zone not expected to affect current ore reserve
  • US$1 million contribution to Catamarca Mining Royalty Trust Fund
  • Financing, RIGI approval and Final Investment Decision remain outstanding

Kachi receives its primary environmental permit

Lake Resources N.L. (ASX:LKE) has cleared the most consequential regulatory hurdle in the development of its Kachi lithium brine project, with Catamarca’s Ministry of Mining issuing the Environmental Impact Declaration after public consultation and interagency reviews.

The declaration is the primary environmental permit granted by provincial authorities. Lake said it confirms that Kachi’s engineering design, resource management plan and sustainability framework comply with Catamarca and Argentine environmental and social standards, although the approval includes obligations expected to be met before commercial operations begin.

A 200-metre exclusion zone adds a planning requirement

The approval incorporates a 200-metre surficial exclusion zone around the lagoon shoreline, defining the boundary between project activity and the lagoon ecosystem. Lake is updating its mineral resource estimate to reflect the restriction, but said its current estimates indicate no effect on the existing Ore Reserve Estimate or the wellfield development plan supporting the proposed production profile.

The company will also contribute US$1 million to Catamarca’s Mining Royalty Trust Fund, paid in instalments between October 2026 and June 2027. Lake said the funds are expected to support infrastructure projects that directly benefit communities in the province.

FEED shifts the focus to engineering and financing

With the permit secured, Lake is moving Kachi into Front-End Engineering Design. The work will refine civil, structural, mechanical and electrical packages for a phase-one facility targeting 25,000 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate equivalent, while also addressing construction logistics, modular assembly and operational risk.

FEED will also cover long-lead equipment and supplier negotiations. Lake said the resulting technical documentation is intended to support discussions with financial advisers Citi and J.P. Morgan, export credit agencies, potential offtakers and strategic equity partners. That makes the phase more than an engineering exercise: it is also the evidentiary bridge between an approved project and a financeable one.

Final investment decision remains the next major test

Lake describes FEED as the final engineering step before a Final Investment Decision. The company also plans to finalise and submit its application for Argentina’s Régimen de Incentivo para Grandes Inversiones, known as RIGI, now that the DIA is in place.

The announcement does not provide final capital costs, funding commitments or project economics. Until FEED, RIGI approval, financing and the FID are completed, Kachi has moved materially closer to construction but has not reached the point where commercial execution is assured.

Bottom Line?

The permit changes Kachi’s immediate problem from environmental approval to execution: the next evidence will come from FEED costs, RIGI progress and firm financing commitments.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the updated mineral resource estimate confirm that the shoreline exclusion zone has no material effect on Kachi’s mine plan?
  • What final capital cost and funding structure will emerge from the FEED process?
  • Can Lake convert the permitting milestone into strategic equity, offtake and debt commitments before the Final Investment Decision?
