Tarrina Resources has identified five kilometre-scale IOCG target zones at Walparuta after soil sampling returned copper values up to 2,891 ppm and gold up to 466 ppb. The planned 23-hole drill campaign remains subject to native title, heritage, land access and government approvals.

- Copper reached 2,891 ppm and gold 466 ppb
- 23 drill holes planned across four kilometres
- Extension IP survey completed, with 3D modelling underway
- Native title, heritage and drilling approvals remain outstanding
Five Copper-Gold Corridors Take Shape
Tarrina Resources Limited (ASX:TR8) has turned a broad geophysical concept at its Walparuta project into five defined copper-gold drill targets, after 998 soil samples outlined kilometre-scale anomalies across South Australia’s Curnamona Province.
The results are notable for their alignment with magnetic, gravity and chargeability corridors associated with iron oxide copper-gold, or IOCG, systems. Copper peaked at 2,891 parts per million and gold at 466 parts per billion, against stated background levels of about 35 ppm copper and 3 ppb gold. The company says the anomalies overlap known bedrock mineralisation and deeper geophysical features, although the results remain surface geochemistry rather than a mineral resource or confirmed economic discovery.
The western magnetic corridor carries copper and gold anomalies over a 3km strike, while the Walparuta Mine Breccia corridor has copper anomalies over 2.6km. Other defined zones include a 1.5km eastern corridor, a 400m deeper anomaly and a new 2.8km copper-gold corridor with low magnetic intensity but near-surface chargeability responses.
Pathfinder Metals Strengthen the IOCG Interpretation
The geochemical pattern extends beyond copper and gold. Tarrina reported elevated cobalt, uranium, iron, vanadium, titanium, molybdenum and rare earth elements, with maximum values of 488 ppm cobalt, 38 ppm uranium, 9.97% iron and 985.8 ppm total rare earth elements. The company says the spatial relationships between these elements and copper-gold anomalies are consistent with a large IOCG hydrothermal system.
There are important qualifications in the data. Rare earth results from the handheld pXRF work are described as minimum approximations, while the soil survey was collected at 20-metre intervals along selected induced-polarisation lines. The JORC tables also note that historical drilling and quality-control records are incomplete, and that the spacing is not sufficient for a Mineral Resource estimate. In other words, the geochemistry has improved the targeting case, but it has not yet established grade continuity, thickness or economic value at depth.
Drilling Depends on Approvals and Target Refinement
Tarrina has planned 23 holes to test a four-kilometre extent of the anomalous corridors, with drilling planned to reach depths of up to 1,200 metres. The completed extension IP survey will be modelled in three dimensions and used alongside petrophysical and rock-sample data to refine hole locations, target depths and drill lengths.
The timetable is not entirely in the company’s hands. Walparuta sits within a native title determination area, and Tarrina says a Native Title Mining Agreement and Aboriginal heritage clearance are prerequisites for ground-disturbing exploration on native title land. Land access negotiations, government drilling approvals and approval of the company’s PEPR application also remain to be completed. Tarrina has applied for a South Australian PACE Minerals Grant that, if successful, could fund 50% of the planned drilling program up to a maximum of $350,000, but the grant has not been awarded.
Bottom Line?
Walparuta now has a more coherent drill thesis, but the investment case still turns on approvals and whether drilling converts surface anomalies into substantive copper-gold intersections.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the three-dimensional IP modelling materially change the priority or depth of the 23 planned drill holes?
- How quickly can Tarrina secure native title, heritage, land access and government approvals?
- Will drilling confirm meaningful sulphide mineralisation beneath the kilometre-scale soil anomalies?
