10 HREO domains identified as HRE reports $1.61 million loss

Mining By Maxwell Dee 5 min read

Heavy Rare Earths has identified high-grade heavy rare earth zones at Subron while preparing drilling across its South Australian portfolio. But the FY2026 report also highlights a material uncertainty over the company’s ability to continue as a going concern, with only $459,327 in cash at year-end.

  • 10 high-grade HREO domains identified at Subron
  • 159 million tonne inferred resource at 870ppm TREO
  • 38-hole, 3,400m Prospect Hill drilling program prepared
  • FY2026 loss narrowed to $1.61 million
  • Material going concern uncertainty and ongoing funding risk

Funding risk shadows Subron’s heavy rare earth potential

Heavy Rare Earths Limited (ASX:HRE) has entered FY2027 with its most compelling exploration story and its clearest financial constraint now sitting side by side. A strategic review at the Subron Rare Earths Project in Western Australia identified 10 high-grade heavy rare earth oxide domains, but the company held only $459,327 in cash at 30 June 2026 and the financial report records a material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on its ability to continue as a going concern.

The company reported a loss of $1.61 million in Australian dollars for FY2026, narrower than the $3.22 million loss recorded a year earlier. That improvement did not translate into a lower cash requirement: operating activities consumed $1.42 million, broadly in line with the $1.43 million used in FY2025. Net assets fell to $353,480 from $1.84 million, leaving HRE reliant on further funding, deferred expenditure or a slower exploration program if capital is not available on suitable terms.

Subron review isolates high-grade HREO zones

Subron, formerly known as Cowalinya, retains a 159 million tonne JORC Inferred Mineral Resource grading 870ppm total rare earth oxides. The strategic review re-examined more than 550 aircore holes against magnetic data and structural trends, identifying 12.9km of newly delineated corridors within and beside the existing resource.

Across intervals grading above 300ppm HREO, the database returned 150 significant intercepts averaging 1,653ppm TREO and 579ppm HREO, equivalent to a 38% HREO ratio. The standout result was 8m at 3,057ppm TREO, including 1,344ppm HREO, from 27m at the Seawolf prospect. Other reported intercepts included 11m at 4,606ppm TREO at Nordenfelt and 4m at 3,611ppm TREO at Blume.

Those numbers remain exploration results, not a revised resource or an economic demonstration. HRE plans to re-domain the existing resource around the higher-grade zones and complete mineralogical characterisation and metallurgical testwork, with the stated aim of defining a smaller, higher-value resource. The project’s proximity to Esperance port and Lynas Rare Earths’ Kalgoorlie processing facility provides a potential logistical pathway, but processing, economics and development remain to be established.

Prospect Hill drilling ready to start

In South Australia, HRE secured the full mineral rights at Prospect Hill, including the South Ridge tin deposit, and expanded its planned maiden program to up to 38 holes covering 3,400 metres. The company has received the required environmental approval and Aboriginal Heritage Clearance, engaged a drilling contractor and prepared drill sites, although regional road access has delayed the start of the campaign.

The program will test a South Ridge shear zone mapped over 1.85km and collect material for metallurgical work and a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate. Historic drilling included intersections such as 3m at 4.85% tin and 5m at 3.32% tin, while a separate historic result also showed silver, copper, zinc and lead credits alongside tin. These results are historical and still require modern drilling and resource work to determine their significance.

Radium Hill adds uranium, scandium and rare earth exposure

At Radium Hill, reconnaissance sampling defined an 8km Bonython Critical Minerals Corridor carrying uranium, scandium, yttrium and rare earth anomalies. Results included up to 0.36% U3O8, 721ppm scandium oxide and 1,728ppm yttrium oxide at Bristowe’s/Railway, with anomalism also extending 5km along strike to Bonython Hill.

HRE expanded its Havilah Resources earn-in beyond uranium to cover the broader mineral suite and received a waiver of the previous minimum-spend requirement. Initial University of Adelaide analysis identified monazite and xenotime in samples from the corridor, while a post-year-end collaboration with ANSTO Minerals is intended to support metallurgical testwork and processing pathway development. A maiden Radium Hill drilling program remains subject to permits and heritage clearances.

August capital raising buys exploration time

After year-end, HRE announced a $1.3 million placement at 2.8 cents a share, alongside a one-for-eight entitlement offer targeting approximately $728,119. The first placement tranche raised $868,000 before costs through the issue of 31 million shares on 26 August. The company says the funds are intended for drilling at Prospect Hill and Radium Hill and continued work on the Subron review.

That raise addresses an immediate funding need, but does not remove the longer-term issue identified in the accounts. HRE has no operating revenue, expects exploration to continue consuming cash and says future equity or debt funding may be required. The capital raising also increases the share count, while further performance rights and options remain outstanding, making the conversion of exploration momentum into a sustainable funding position the next test.

Bottom Line?

HRE now has three credible exploration workstreams, but the value of the portfolio will depend on drilling, metallurgy and resource upgrades arriving before the next funding requirement becomes urgent.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can Subron’s high HREO domains support a materially smaller, higher-value resource after re-domaining and metallurgical testwork?
  • When will road access and approvals allow the Prospect Hill and Radium Hill drilling programs to begin?
  • How long will the August capital raising fund exploration before HRE needs to seek additional capital?
