Abacus Group has begun an external search for a new managing director after Steven Sewell indicated he intends to retire by 9 July 2027, or earlier if a successor is appointed. Sewell sets retirement timetable
Abacus Group (ASX:ABG) has opened the search for a new managing director after Steven Sewell told the board he intends to retire. Sewell is expected to remain in the role until 9 July 2027, although his departure could come sooner if a successor is appointed.
The board has appointed executive search firm Spencer Stuart to lead the process. Abacus said it will announce the outcome once a successor has been selected, leaving the identity and timing of the next chief executive unresolved for now.
Leadership change follows Storage King transition
The handover follows the completion of Storage King internalisation on 30 June 2026, a structural shift that Abacus identified as the appropriate point for Sewell to pass leadership to a new person. The company previously described the move as part of a refocus on its core commercial real estate business.
Chair Mark Haberlin credited Sewell with helping transform Abacus from a core-plus real estate investor with opportunistically acquired higher-risk assets into a specialised commercial real estate investment trust. He also said Sewell had preserved the group’s entrepreneurial culture while driving the growth and creation of the separately listed Storage King Group.
Incentive treatment disclosed ahead of departure
Sewell will receive his normal remuneration until his employment ends and will remain eligible for a pro-rata FY27 short-term incentive. He will also be eligible for an FY27 long-term incentive, subject to securityholder approval at Abacus’s November 2026 annual general meeting, with the number of rights prorated for his period of employment.
His unvested awards will be handled under their original terms. The announcement does not disclose the value of the remuneration or awards, making the eventual successor appointment the more consequential next milestone for investors assessing whether the group’s strategy and operating style will remain consistent.
Bottom Line?
The transition is planned rather than immediate, but the successor’s experience and mandate will determine whether Abacus’s post-Storage King strategy remains steady.
Questions in the middle?
- Who will Abacus select to lead the group after Sewell’s departure?
- Will the new managing director maintain the current focus on specialised commercial real estate?
- What incentive package will securityholders be asked to approve at the November annual meeting?
