Ballard secures A$45 million to advance Mt Ida gold project

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Ballard Mining has secured A$45 million from institutional and sophisticated investors, giving its 1.84 million ounce Mt Ida project funding for drilling, infrastructure and development studies. A further A$5 million shareholder offer could take the raise to A$50 million, although the SPP is not underwritten.

  • A$45 million placement at A$0.66 per share, a 7.7% discount to the last close
  • Share purchase plan targets up to a further A$5 million from eligible Australian and New Zealand shareholders
  • Pro forma cash of approximately A$94.1 million assumes the SPP is fully subscribed
  • A$40 million allocated to resource growth and infill drilling
  • Final investment decision for the approved processing facility remains targeted for mid-2027

A$45 Million Placement Secures Mt Ida Funding

Ballard Mining Limited (ASX:BM1) has secured the bulk of its planned capital raising, locking in A$45 million through a placement priced at A$0.66 a share. The issue price represents a 7.7% discount to Ballard’s last closing price of A$0.715 and a 16.2% discount to its 10-day VWAP, with approximately 68.2 million new shares to be issued.

The raising was supported by existing shareholders and new domestic and international resource-focused institutions, according to the company. The placement is not underwritten and will use Ballard’s existing placement capacity, with the new shares expected to rank equally with those already on issue.

Shareholder Offer Could Lift Proceeds to A$50 Million

Eligible shareholders in Australia and New Zealand will be offered the chance to buy up to A$30,000 of shares at the same A$0.66 issue price through a share purchase plan. The offer targets a further A$5 million, although Ballard can scale applications back, close the offer early or accept oversubscriptions of up to another A$5 million.

The SPP is not underwritten, so the company’s stated pro forma cash balance of approximately A$94.1 million depends on raising the full additional A$5 million. That figure combines unaudited cash of A$44.1 million at 30 September with the full A$50 million capital raising, before transaction costs. The latest capital raising completes the transaction proposed in Ballard’s Mt Ida funding plan, which had targeted up to A$50 million for the project.

Drilling Takes A$40 Million of the Budget

Ballard’s largest planned allocation is exploration and resource definition. It has earmarked A$20 million for drilling beyond the existing 1.84 million ounce Mineral Resource Estimate and another A$20 million for infill drilling intended to improve confidence in the inventory.

The September resource contains 20.376 million tonnes at 2.8 grams per tonne gold for 1.836 million ounces. However, the announcement does not report a maiden Ore Reserve, and the company says the feasibility study, including that reserve statement, still needs to be completed. The funds will therefore be used both to pursue resource growth and to advance the work needed to assess how much of the resource could ultimately support a mine plan.

Accommodation Village Moves Into Construction Planning

Alongside the drilling program, Ballard has approved the design and construction of a permanent 250-person accommodation village at Mt Ida. The company has allocated A$28 million to the village, which it says is intended to support future construction and operations workforces across possible development scenarios.

A further A$13.5 million is allocated to pre-FID works and studies, including A$10 million for front-end engineering design, A$3.5 million for a public road diversion and dewatering bores, and A$3 million for the feasibility study. Ballard says the Mt Ida processing facility is fully approved but remains subject to a final investment decision targeted for mid-2027.

Dilution Arrives Before the Development Decision

The placement provides Ballard with a clearer funding runway, but it also increases the number of shares on issue and prices the new stock below recent market measures. Existing holders who do not participate in the placement or SPP will face dilution, while SPP participation is limited to eligible shareholders and remains subject to the final amount raised.

The immediate test is execution: placement shares are expected to be issued around 19 October, while the SPP is scheduled to close on 9 November. Beyond the capital raising, the more consequential milestones are the drilling results, feasibility work and maiden Ore Reserve that must precede the targeted mid-2027 investment decision.

Bottom Line?

Ballard now has substantial planned funding for Mt Ida, but the investment case still turns on converting a large Mineral Resource into a defined reserve and a fundable development decision.

Questions in the middle?

  • How much of the additional A$5 million will Ballard ultimately secure through the non-underwritten SPP?
  • Will resource growth and infill drilling translate into a maiden Ore Reserve before the targeted mid-2027 FID?
  • Can the planned A$94.1 million cash balance support the accommodation village, early works and study program without another capital raising?
