Anatara Takes Anti-Obesity Compound AOC Toward Manufacturing

Healthcare By Ada Torres 3 min read

Anatara Lifesciences will manufacture an approximately 10,000-capsule demonstration batch of its AOC anti-obesity compound after deciding further pre-clinical work and an immediate clinical trial are not required. The company ended September with $551,000 in cash, helped by a $318,402 R&D tax rebate.

  • AOC demonstration batch planned at approximately 10,000 capsules
  • Further pre-clinical work and immediate clinical trial ruled unnecessary by Anatara
  • Mouse studies showed reduced weight regain and perigonadal fat, but GLP-1 mechanism data remained inconclusive
  • September quarter-end cash rose to $551,000 after a $318,402 R&D rebate
  • Directors agreed to receive 40% of fees in future equity instead of cash

AOC Moves From Research Into Product Preparation

Anatara Lifesciences Ltd (ASX:ANR) is taking its anti-obesity project into a more practical phase, with plans to manufacture an approximately 10,000-capsule demonstration batch of compound AOC. The batch is intended for stability testing and registration for human use in sales and marketing, although Anatara has not announced a commercial launch, regulatory approval or manufacturing agreement.

The decision marks a change in direction for a project that had been assessing whether an open-label study should follow its pre-clinical work. Anatara said it concluded that further pre-clinical experiments were not required and that a clinical trial was unlikely to add to its understanding of the compound’s mechanism of action, based on its review of established literature. An open-label post-marketing assessment remains under consideration.

Mouse Data Supports the Weight-Control Proposition

The company’s case for AOC rests on signals from studies in diet-induced obese mice, rather than human clinical evidence. The compound was associated with a statistically significant reduction in weight regain after semaglutide-induced weight loss, compared with the study’s placebo vehicle, with a reported p-value below 0.019. AOC also produced a significant reduction in perigonadal fat weight in the study, based on 12 mice and a reported p-value of 0.024.

Those findings follow the earlier release of AOC pre-clinical results, which reported reductions in weight regain and visceral fat in mice. The limitations remain material: Anatara said the full mechanism-of-action dataset was inconclusive on whether AOC directly affected endogenous GLP-1 levels, and the company has spent more than $350,000 on the proof-of-concept studies.

Cash Rises on Tax Rebate as Strategic Review Continues

Anatara ended the September quarter with $551,000 in cash, up from $471,000 at the end of June. Net operating cash inflow was $80,000, but the quarter was supported by the $318,402 R&D tax incentive rebate received in September. The filing therefore offers a stronger quarter-end cash balance without establishing that the underlying business is generating recurring operating cash.

The company continues to assess transactions, including potential acquisitions, while commercial interest in its GaRP gastrointestinal intellectual property remains under discussion. Manuscripts covering GaRP’s pre-clinical work and IBS clinical trial have been submitted for review and publication. Directors have also agreed to reduce cash fees to 60% of current remuneration, with the remaining 40% to be compensated through equity at a future price that has not yet been determined.

Bottom Line?

The next test is execution: securing a manufacturing partner, completing stability work and showing whether AOC can progress beyond promising mouse data without quickly consuming Anatara’s limited cash reserve.

Questions in the middle?

  • How quickly can Anatara secure a manufacturing partner and complete stability testing for the demonstration batch?
  • Will the company pursue an open-label human assessment, and what evidence would support commercial registration of AOC?
  • Can Anatara generate licensing, transaction or other commercial funding before the benefit of the R&D rebate fades from its cash position?
