Cleo Moves Ovarian Cancer Test Into FDA Validation Pathway

Cleo Diagnostics has moved its pre-surgical ovarian cancer test into formal Analytical Validation, a key regulatory step before its planned FDA 510(k) submission in the first half of 2027. The three-batch program is expected to take about three months, but no validation results have yet been reported.

  • Analytical Validation has commenced after receipt of the first 125 Bio-Techne production kits
  • Three independently manufactured batches will be assessed for precision, reproducibility and robustness
  • Testing is being conducted predominantly in-house on Bio-Techne’s Ella platform
  • Clinical Validation and final algorithm work remain ahead of the planned FDA 510(k) submission

Cleo Enters Formal Regulatory Testing

Cleo Diagnostics Limited (ASX:COV) has begun Analytical Validation of its pre-surgical ovarian cancer test, moving the assay from development and optimisation into formal testing under the FDA framework. The company says the work will generate analytical performance data needed to support Clinical Validation and a planned FDA 510(k) submission in the first half of calendar 2027.

The start follows receipt of the first 125 production test kits manufactured by Bio-Techne (NASDAQ:TECH), alongside completion of Cleo’s internal documentation and other pre-validation activities. It marks a significant process milestone, although the announcement reports the launch of testing rather than any validation outcome.

Three Production Batches Under Review

The program will assess three independently manufactured batches of the commercial kits. Cleo intends to use the testing to demonstrate precision, reproducibility, manufacturing consistency and overall analytical robustness across production runs.

The first batch has now entered the program, following the earlier receipt of the first commercial test batch from Bio-Techne. The second and third batches are estimated to arrive in November 2026, with Analytical Validation expected to run for approximately three months.

Testing is being conducted predominantly in-house using Bio-Techne’s Ella automated immunoassay platform. The resulting dataset is expected to form an important component of the planned FDA submission, but the filing does not disclose performance thresholds, interim findings or any FDA assessment.

Clinical Validation Still Stands Between Testing and Filing

Analytical Validation is one part of a longer regulatory pathway. Cleo still needs to finalise the commercial assay algorithm, complete Clinical Validation using samples from its pivotal US trial and control groups, analyse the clinical data and then prepare the 510(k) submission.

That sequence leaves several execution points between the current milestone and a regulatory filing. The company’s stated target remains the first half of 2027, but the announcement makes clear that timing depends on completing the analytical and clinical work still ahead.

Bottom Line?

The regulatory pathway has advanced, but the more consequential evidence will come from the three-batch results and subsequent clinical validation.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will all three production batches meet the analytical performance requirements needed to progress into Clinical Validation?
  • When will Cleo release clinical validation results from its pivotal US trial and control samples?
  • Can the company maintain its first-half 2027 FDA submission target as the remaining testing and algorithm work proceeds?
