PGG Wrightson sees FY27 earnings lift as farm confidence holds

Agriculture By Ada Torres 3 min read

PGG Wrightson expects FY27 Operating EBITDA of approximately NZ$70 million, up from NZ$64.3 million in FY26, after an encouraging first quarter. The forecast rests on supportive commodity prices and farmer confidence, but remains exposed to input costs, weather and a planned reassessment after the second quarter.

  • FY27 Operating EBITDA forecast of approximately NZ$70 million
  • Forecast is up from NZ$64.3 million in FY26
  • Retail & Water delivered an encouraging first quarter
  • Livestock earnings remain weighted to the second half
  • Guidance may be reassessed after key second-quarter trading months

FY27 EBITDA forecast rises to approximately NZ$70 million

PGG Wrightson Limited (NZX:PGW) has set a cautiously positive marker for the new financial year, forecasting FY27 Operating EBITDA of approximately NZ$70 million. That would be an increase of about 8.9% on the NZ$64.3 million reported for FY26, based on current trading and market conditions.

Chair John Nichol said the first quarter had been encouraging, particularly in Retail & Water. Livestock, the group’s second-largest business unit, is weighted towards the second half of the year, meaning the forecast still depends materially on trading that has yet to occur.

Commodity prices support farmer confidence

The guidance arrives after PGG Wrightson’s stronger FY26 earnings result, when Operating EBITDA reached NZ$64.3 million. The company says New Zealand agriculture enters FY27 in a stronger position than it has been for several years, with dairy and red meat returns supported by resilient international demand and constrained global supply.

Kiwifruit and apple conditions are also described as positive, while rural property activity remains supportive, particularly for dairy and kiwifruit properties. Those factors are helping sustain farmer confidence and investment intentions, although elevated fuel, fertiliser, financing and other input costs continue to restrain the sector.

Weather and weaker currency remain key variables

A weaker New Zealand dollar is increasing some imported costs while supporting export returns. The company also flags a more difficult environment in parts of the arable and viticulture sectors, where lower commodity prices, oversupply in some categories and cost pressures are encouraging caution.

Weather adds another layer of uncertainty. The prospect of El Niño increases the risk of dry conditions, particularly in eastern regions, while global economic, geopolitical and climatic risks remain in play. New Zealand’s general election in November may also influence agricultural policy.

Second-quarter trading will test the forecast

PGG Wrightson plans to reassess its NZ$70 million forecast after the key second-quarter trading months and update the market as appropriate. The next update should therefore offer a clearer test of whether the positive first-quarter momentum and favourable agricultural conditions are translating into a durable full-year earnings trajectory, rather than merely an early-season lift.

Bottom Line?

The forecast points to a stronger FY27, but the second-quarter trading period will determine how much confidence investors can place in the NZ$70 million target.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can Retail & Water maintain its encouraging first-quarter performance through the rest of FY27?
  • Will Livestock earnings deliver the expected second-half contribution amid changing commodity and weather conditions?
  • How much will input-cost inflation, currency movements and potential El Niño conditions affect the NZ$70 million forecast?
