IAG Puts $20m WA Commitment Behind RAC Alliance Approval Push
IAG has offered a package of competition remedies to support approval of its proposed 20-year insurance alliance with RAC of Western Australia, including the transfer of NRMA policy renewal rights and a $20 million community investment. The insurer says the transaction still carries $1.2 billion in additional annual gross written premium and approximately $100 million in annual pre-tax synergies once integration is complete.

IAG Offers Competition Remedies for RAC Alliance
IAG has put a significant concession on the table to keep its proposed RAC insurance alliance moving: the renewal rights for active NRMA Insurance home and motor policies in Western Australia would be transferred to another insurer through a sale process. The company says the remedy, alongside wider customer and community commitments, is designed to address competition concerns raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission while preserving the transaction's underlying rationale.
The move comes after the ACCC Phase 2 review, which had flagged competition concerns in Western Australia's motor and home insurance markets. IAG is now seeking an ACCC determination that the alliance should proceed because it would deliver a net public benefit. The proposed measures remain conditional on the alliance being approved and completed.
RAC Coverage and Pricing Safeguards Expand
The package also targets an identified availability gap. IAG has proposed making RAC home insurance available in parts of the state's North West above the 26th parallel, including Karratha, Port Hedland and Broome, where the release says insurance options are currently limited.
A further $20 million would be invested in Western Australian community resilience initiatives over the next decade, in addition to RAC's existing community investment program. IAG has also offered stronger measures around product pricing, competitiveness and member outcomes if it breaches requirements relating to the RAC-branded insurance offering. The release does not set out the final form of those safeguards.
Financial Rationale Remains Unchanged
IAG says the alliance and the transfer of NRMA renewal rights would result in an additional $1.2 billion in annual gross written premium. It maintains that the transaction is expected to be earnings per share accretive in the first full year of ownership and mid-single digit EPS accretive once the full synergy run-rate is achieved.
Integration costs are expected to run at $15 million to $25 million a year for three years. Together with reinsurance synergies, IAG expects approximately $100 million in annual pre-tax synergies once integration is complete. The next material test is regulatory rather than financial: the ACCC's public benefits phase is expected to conclude in December 2026, although the timetable may be extended. The identity and timing of the buyer for the NRMA renewal rights, and the eventual shape of the pricing protections, remain unresolved.
Bottom Line?
IAG has preserved the headline economics of the RAC deal, but approval now depends on whether the proposed remedies satisfy the ACCC without weakening the alliance's customer and synergy case.
Questions in the middle?
- Will the ACCC accept the proposed transfer of NRMA renewal rights as sufficient to address competition concerns?
- Which insurer will acquire the Western Australian NRMA renewal rights, and on what terms?
- How will the stronger pricing and competitiveness safeguards affect the economics of the RAC-branded offering?
