Ryoncil Revenue Reaches US$28 Million
Mesoblast Limited (ASX:MSB; Nasdaq:MESO) has opened fiscal 2026 with a substantial improvement in both sales and cash usage. Net revenue from Ryoncil rose 44% year on year to US$28 million for the three months ended September 30, while net operating cash spend fell to US$2.3 million from US$14.9 million.
The company said September produced its highest monthly number of new patient starts, following expected seasonality in July and August when summer recesses affected treatment scheduling. Ryoncil adoption is now being expanded across 54 onboarded sites, according to chief executive Dr Silviu Itescu. The quarter's figures come after Mesoblast's full-year Ryoncil sales reached US$115.2 million in the prior reporting period.
Cash Position Strengthened by Lower Operating Spend
Revenue growth and reduced operational cash usage left Mesoblast with US$99 million in cash at September 30. That gives the company a stronger reported cash position as it funds commercial manufacturing requirements and late-stage clinical programs, although the release does not provide a cash-flow statement, margins or formal financial guidance.
The sharp reduction in operating cash spend is notable, but it is not yet a complete measure of profitability. The announcement provides no net profit figure or detailed reconciliation of the quarterly cash-spend number, and the reported results are management's preliminary estimates pending customary closing and audit procedures.
Commercial Expansion Still Depends on Site Adoption
Mesoblast describes Ryoncil as the first FDA-approved mesenchymal stromal cell product and the only FDA-approved product for children under 12 with steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease. It is also developing Ryoncil for adult disease and biologic-resistant inflammatory bowel disease, while its rexlemestrocel-L program targets heart failure and chronic low back pain.
For now, the immediate test is whether the September acceleration can be sustained across the 54 sites. The next reporting update should help distinguish a durable increase in patient starts from a favourable seasonal rebound, while also showing how much of the US$99 million cash balance is being consumed by manufacturing and clinical development.
Bottom Line?
The quarter shows a more efficient commercial engine, but sustained patient starts and audited cash-flow detail will determine how much weight to place on the improvement.
Questions in the middle?
- Can September's record patient starts be sustained beyond the seasonal treatment rebound?
- How much of the reported cash balance will be directed to manufacturing and late-stage trials?
- Will the next update provide enough detail to assess profitability rather than cash usage alone?
