Firebird’s 5N manganese result sets up Australian ore test
Firebird Metals has produced 99.999% ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate at its Hunan pilot plant and started processing ore from its Western Australian Oakover project. The next test is whether the result can be independently replicated with Australian feedstock before the Perth demonstration plant begins commissioning in 2027.
- 99.999% or 5N manganese sulphate produced at Hunan pilot plant
- Fluoride-free process achieved impurity levels of mostly 1 ppm or below
- Oakover ore campaign underway ahead of planned Perth replication
- Company claims ultra-high-purity product attracts an approximate 33% premium
- Independent validation, scale-up and customer qualification remain outstanding

Firebird achieves 99.999% manganese sulphate purity
Firebird Metals Limited (ASX:FRB) has produced manganese sulphate with a reported purity of 99.999%, a technical milestone that moves its battery-materials strategy beyond standard high-purity grades. The result was achieved at the company’s Hunan pilot plant using a manganese-specific extractant and an in-line impurity removal process.
Firebird said most measured impurities were at or below 1 part per million, with calcium at or below 5 ppm. The product exceeded the purity thresholds cited from China’s HG/T 4823-2023 industry standards, while third-party testing also reported impurity levels below the relevant detection limits, although the company’s announcement did not identify the independent laboratory.
Oakover ore moves into the next technical campaign
The more consequential question now is whether the process can handle Australian ore rather than only produce a high-purity result in the Hunan facility. Firebird has begun a further technical program using a representative sample from its 100%-owned Oakover Manganese Project in Western Australia, building on the first Oakover feedstock preparation reported last month.
The campaign is intended to process the ore through Firebird’s proprietary flowsheet into ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate. The company plans to replicate the same work as the first experimental campaign at its Australian Demonstration Plant in Osborne Park, Perth, during initial commissioning activities. Results will be reported after completion and independent testing.
Fluoride-free process targets flexible feedstocks
Firebird’s process is designed to avoid fluorine-containing reagents, which the company says removes the need for specialised fluoride-resistant equipment and avoids fluorine-containing waste residues. It also claims the flowsheet can accommodate low-grade, high-impurity manganese ores, waste materials and wastewater, with continuous and automated operation envisaged for eventual commercial use.
The company says ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate attracts an approximate 33% price premium to typical high-purity material because of its limited availability. That pricing claim is company-provided, and the announcement offers no customer contract or commercial sales evidence. The economic case therefore still depends on whether purity, feedstock flexibility and extraction efficiency survive larger-scale operation.
Perth demonstration plant remains the commercialisation test
The Oakover campaign is designed to support Firebird’s preparations for its Perth demonstration plant, which is targeted for commissioning in 2027 and backed by a $2 million ARENA grant. The plant is intended to validate the company’s integrated pathway from Western Australian manganese feedstock to high-purity manganese sulphate and downstream manganese-rich battery materials, including LMFP and LMR cathode products.
Firebird’s claim that it is the sole Western company to have manufactured 5N manganese sulphate is presented as a company assessment rather than an independently established market fact. The immediate milestones are clearer: independently validated Oakover results, successful replication in Perth and evidence that the process can move from pilot achievement to reliable demonstration-scale production.
Bottom Line?
The 5N result strengthens Firebird’s technical story, but the decisive evidence will come from independently validated Oakover product and repeatable Perth operation in 2027.
Questions in the middle?
- Will Oakover ore produce the same 5N purity once independently tested?
- Can the fluoride-free flowsheet maintain its extraction and impurity-removal performance at demonstration scale?
- Will Firebird secure customer qualification or commercial commitments before pursuing a larger production facility?
