Beach Energy has agreed to spend A$25 million in cash and carry A$90 million of exploration costs to expand its Taroom Trough footprint to 1,481 km2. The deal gives Beach operatorship of key permits, but remains subject to approvals and pre-emptive rights.
- A$25 million cash payment plus A$90 million exploration and appraisal carry
- 50% operated interests in ATP 2044 and ATP 2077 A-B
- Beach’s Taroom Trough position to reach 1,481 km2 net acreage
- Initial 2C Contingent Resource booking targeted in FY27 reserves process
- Completion remains subject to approvals and pre-emptive rights
Beach Secures Operatorship Across More Than 1,000 km2
Beach Energy Limited (ASX:BPT) is moving to become one of the largest acreage holders in Queensland’s Taroom Trough, agreeing to farm into Elixir Energy’s core permits for A$25 million in cash and A$90 million of exploration and appraisal work program carry. Subject to completion, the transaction will add more than 1,000 km2 of net acreage and lift Beach’s total Taroom Trough position to 1,481 km2.
The deal gives Beach a 50% operated interest in ATP 2044 and ATP 2077 A-B, alongside a 25% interest in ATP 2056 and ATP 2057. Beach will take over operatorship of ATP 2044 and ATP 2077 A-B, allowing it to determine the scope and priority of work during the approximately four-year farm-in period.
The transaction builds on the company’s existing 25% non-operated interest in ATP 2081 and its recently awarded Block 10, which is to be renamed ATP 2082. Beach’s growing Queensland position follows its new Taroom Trough acreage secured earlier this year, although the earlier award sits within an Omega-operated joint venture rather than the Elixir acreage being acquired here.
A Four-Year Carry Links Spending to Appraisal
Under the agreement, Beach will fund Elixir’s share of exploration and appraisal costs, including general and administrative expenses, up to A$90 million over roughly four years. Beach retains discretion over how that carry is deployed, while any unused amount at the end of the farm-in period is payable to Elixir in cash.
The acreage covers 2,859 km2 gross across the western flank and central Taroom Trough, about 20 to 120 kilometres southeast of the Wallumbilla Gas Hub. The permits are near existing East Coast gas infrastructure and services, but the transaction is still an appraisal bet rather than a production expansion: the announcement does not provide a production target or development decision.
Resource Potential Comes Before Commercial Proof
Elixir has previously reported an independently certified 2C Contingent Resource estimate of approximately 3.5 trillion cubic feet equivalent net across stacked plays including the Tinowon, Overstone and Lorelle reservoirs. Beach says it intends to make an initial 2C Contingent Resource booking as part of its FY27 reserves process, but that future booking remains dependent on the company’s assessment of the acreage and its reserves process.
Beach managing director and chief executive Brett Woods described the partnership as a way to gain “a material, operated position” in an emerging resource play while broadening exposure across multiple Taroom Trough work programs. That scale may improve the company’s ability to compare results across the basin, but the filing also makes clear that appraisal is at an early stage and the most prospective regions and horizons have not yet been established.
Completion Depends on Approvals and Pre-Emptive Rights
Completion is expected in the second half of FY27 and remains subject to customary regulatory and other approvals, as well as pre-emptive rights over ATP 2056 and ATP 2057. If those rights are exercised, Beach would not acquire the affected interests and the associated carry would be reduced.
The final acreage could also change as permit work commitments, renewals and potential conversion applications progress. The immediate question is therefore not whether Beach has secured a large headline position, but how much of that position survives completion and whether the first seismic, drilling and testing program can convert contingent potential into a resource base with a clearer route to development.
Bottom Line?
Beach is buying scale and operatorship in an early-stage gas play; the next value test is whether the appraisal program supports the planned FY27 resource booking without expanding the capital burden.
Questions in the middle?
- Will pre-emptive rights reduce Beach’s final interests in ATP 2056 or ATP 2057?
- What drilling, seismic and testing results will underpin the initial FY27 2C Contingent Resource booking?
- Can the Taroom Trough acreage progress from contingent resource potential to a commercially justified development?
