Geopacific gains flexible funding for Woodlark's next phase

Geopacific Resources has secured access to $8 million from major shareholder Deutsche Balaton AG through four unsecured bonds, giving the Woodlark development team funding as it works towards a Final Investment Decision. The facility is flexible, but carries a 15% annual interest rate and matures in June 2027.

  • $8 million unsecured bond facility from Deutsche Balaton AG
  • Four bonds can be issued progressively at Geopacific's election
  • Bonds issued at 96.5% of face value with 15% annual interest
  • Funding to support Woodlark planning and project finance work
  • No Final Investment Decision has yet been made

$8 Million Facility Keeps Woodlark Work Moving

Geopacific Resources Limited (ASX:GPR) has secured access to $8 million in unsecured funding from Deutsche Balaton AG, a member of the Deutsche Balaton Group and a 47% shareholder in the company. The facility is intended to fund planning, project financing and other development work at the 1.98 million-ounce Woodlark Gold Project in Papua New Guinea as Geopacific progresses towards a Final Investment Decision.

The arrangement does not confirm that the full amount has been drawn. Instead, Geopacific can elect to issue four bearer bonds progressively, giving it flexibility over when it accesses the facility. The company said its project finance and strategic partnering process, appointed to Argonaut and Taylor Collison in January, remains ongoing.

Funding Comes With a 15% Coupon

The bonds have an aggregate face value of $8 million, but will be issued for $7.72 million, equivalent to 96.5% of face value. They carry interest of 15% a year from the date of issue, with interest payable at maturity on 30 June 2027. The bonds are unsecured.

That structure gives Geopacific near-term funding without an immediate equity issue, but it is an expensive and relatively short-dated source of capital. The eventual repayment obligation will depend on how much of the facility is drawn, while the announcement does not set out a separate repayment or refinancing plan.

Woodlark Economics Set the Financing Target

The funding arrives after the recently completed Woodlark DFS outlined a project forecast to produce more than 100,000 ounces of gold a year at below A$2,000 an ounce in all-in sustaining costs. The study reported a post-tax NPV8% of A$1.3 billion, a post-tax internal rate of return of 50.6% and an 18-month payback period, subject to the assumptions and production-target cautions attached to that work.

Geopacific's stated mineral resource is 70.1 million tonnes at 0.88 grams per tonne for 1.98 million ounces of gold. Its ore reserve is 34.3 million tonnes at 1.09 grams per tonne for 1.2 million ounces. Those figures are reiterated from the May 2026 announcements rather than being new estimates in this funding announcement.

The Next Test Is Project-Level Financing

The bond facility gives the company room to continue project work while it pursues larger-scale financing and strategic partners. The key tension is timing: the bonds mature on 30 June 2027, while Geopacific has not yet announced a Final Investment Decision or the complete funding package required to build Woodlark.

Bottom Line?

The facility buys Geopacific time to advance Woodlark, but the 15% coupon and June 2027 maturity make progress on project financing and the eventual FID increasingly important.

Questions in the middle?

  • How much of the $8 million facility will Geopacific draw, and when?
  • Can the company secure strategic or project-level financing before the bonds mature?
  • What funding structure will support construction if Woodlark proceeds to a Final Investment Decision?
