Strata’s Zelica resource gives development plans a firmer footing
Strata Minerals advanced technical and environmental work at its Zelica Gold Project during the September quarter, while a 42,000oz maiden resource announced after quarter end gave the project a clearer development base. The company ended the period with A$1.4 million in cash and no debt, but remains pre-production and dependent on approvals, further studies and its BML Ventures partnership.
- 42,000oz maiden JORC resource at 1.61g/t gold, including 28,500oz Indicated
- Metallurgical, environmental and geological work progressed at Zelica
- 27.8km² high-resolution aeromagnetic survey completed across the expanded project area
- BML Ventures partnership intended to cover future development and operating costs, subject to conditions
- A$1.4 million cash and no debt at 30 September, equivalent to 3.33 quarters at reported outgoings

42,000oz resource sharpens Zelica’s development case
Strata Minerals Limited (ASX:SMX) has moved its Zelica Gold Project another step away from pure exploration, with technical, environmental and mine-planning work progressing alongside a maiden resource of 42,000 ounces announced after the quarter ended. The JORC 2012 estimate covers 814,000 tonnes at 1.61g/t gold, comprising 28,500oz Indicated and 13,500oz Inferred.
The resource is constrained within an optimised pit shell and sits on a granted mining lease. Mineralisation remains open along strike and at depth, although the estimate is not an Ore Reserve and does not establish that mining will proceed. The quarter’s work therefore matters less as evidence of current production than as an attempt to build the technical and regulatory foundations for a potential development decision. The resource was the subject of Zelica maiden resource, which reported the same estimate earlier in October.
Metallurgy and approvals work move in parallel
During the quarter, Strata collected samples from oxide, transitional and fresh material for metallurgical testing, drawing from a historic stockpile, the historic pit and recent reverse-circulation drilling. Additional sampling covered hanging-wall, footwall and ore-associated waste, as well as the historic waste dump and low-grade stockpile, to support material handling, landform design and rehabilitation planning.
Soil characterisation was completed across several project locations, with samples taken from each soil horizon to inform environmental approvals and mine closure planning. Geological mapping, structural interpretation, petrology and geochemical investigations also commenced. These programs follow the Zelica pre-development programs launched in August, which were designed to support mine design, processing evaluation, permitting and operational planning.
Expanded tenure adds targets across the gold corridor
Strata completed a 27.8km² aeromagnetic survey at 50-metre line spacing across the expanded Zelica area. Much of the ground had not previously been covered by modern, high-resolution airborne geophysics, leaving the company to integrate the new data with drilling, mapping and surface geochemistry before refining targets.
The survey covers an interpreted 9.5km gold corridor, of which less than 15% has been systematically tested. Strata also agreed to acquire Exploration Licence E39/2491 for A$25,000 in cash on completion, subject to conditions precedent, and lodged an application for E39/2606. The survey and tenure expansion build on the expanded Zelica survey, which outlined the project’s enlarged exploration footprint and planned geophysical work.
BML Ventures offers a capital-light route, with conditions attached
Under the Mining Services and Profit Share Agreement signed with BML Ventures Pty Ltd in June, BMLV is responsible for regulatory approvals, mining operations, haulage and toll-treatment arrangements. If the agreement’s conditions precedent are met and the full mining services arrangement begins, BMLV is also to fund the capital and operating costs required for development and mining. After project costs are recovered, net profits would be shared equally.
That structure could reduce Strata’s direct capital burden, but it does not remove the need for approvals, mine planning, processing outcomes or a workable operating arrangement. The company issued 8,571,429 shares to BMLV after quarter end at A$0.0175 each, raising approximately A$150,000, while also issuing 15 million unquoted lead-manager options exercisable at A$0.03.
Cash runway depends on exploration-stage spending
Strata reported A$1.4 million in cash and no debt at 30 September. Quarterly net cash used in operating activities was A$396,000, with a further A$25,000 spent on the acquisition of tenements. On the company’s calculation, total available funding represented 3.33 quarters of cover at the reported spending rate.
That runway is an exploration-stage measure, not a development budget. The next quarter is scheduled to include initial metallurgical results, aeromagnetic interpretation, target generation, mine planning, pit optimisation, grade-control drilling, permitting and submission of a Mine Development and Closure Proposal. Those activities will determine whether Zelica’s new resource can be translated into a credible mining plan, and how much of that pathway BMLV ultimately funds.
Bottom Line?
The 42,000oz resource gives Zelica a clearer starting point, but the next valuation test is whether metallurgy, approvals and mine planning can turn that inventory into a viable development proposition without exhausting Strata’s cash.
Questions in the middle?
- Will initial metallurgical results support a processing route and recovery assumptions consistent with the resource estimate?
- When will the BML Ventures agreement satisfy its conditions precedent and move into the full mining services arrangement?
- How much additional drilling and funding will be required to expand the resource and progress grade control, permitting and mine planning?
