Healthcare Wrap: Sales growth meets funding pressure

Healthcare shares ended a difficult week with funding worries weighing on smaller companies, even as several groups reported stronger sales or clinical progress. Starpharma, Hydration Pharmaceuticals and Saluda were among the largest fallers, while Recce, Zoono and Genetic Signatures posted gains.

  • Starpharma fell 38.00% despite moving its lead radiopharmaceutical closer to human testing.
  • Hydration Pharmaceuticals dropped 33.33% while seeking A$1.43 million for working capital.
  • Saluda fell 26.76% after warning that it may need more capital within 12 months.
  • Recce rose 15.52% as investors awaited an independent review of its Phase 3 wound-treatment data.
  • Sigma, Telix and CSL reported business progress, but merger approvals, new leadership and legal claims remain ahead.

Starpharma (ASX:SPL) was the week’s largest faller, dropping 38.00%. The company submitted its European application for a first-in-human trial of DEP HER2-Lu and ended September with A$34.4 million in cash. The update did not give a reason for the sell-off. Hydration Pharmaceuticals (ASX:HPC) fell 33.33% while asking shareholders for up to A$1.43 million. Investors may have worried about dilution because holders who do not take part could own a smaller share of the company. Saluda Medical (ASX:SLD) dropped 26.76% after its annual report said more money may be needed within 12 months.

Clinical progress meets cash pressure

Biotech companies produced several important updates, but many still need more evidence or cash. Recce Pharmaceuticals (ASX:RCE) rose 15.52% after a blinded review of 75 patients showed strong early results for RECCE 327 Gel. An independent committee is expected to review the unblinded results in mid-November. That review could support continued testing, a move towards regulatory filings, or a change in the trial.

Arovella Therapeutics (ASX:ALA) released two clinical batches of ALA-101 and expects to dose its first patient in October. It also received a A$4.03 million research refund. Actinogen Medical (ASX:ACW) kept its November Alzheimer’s readout on schedule after the final patient visit in XanaMIA. These events move both programmes forward, but neither has yet shown that its treatment works in a large, final study. Acrux (ASX:ACR) received clearer United States guidance for its female testosterone trials, yet still needs funding for the programme.

Sales growth is not always reaching the share price

Several companies reported stronger trading. Telix Pharmaceuticals (ASX:TLX) lifted third-quarter revenue 19% to US$245 million, while Precision Medicine sales rose 30%. Its proposed US$1.65 billion ITM merger still needs shareholder approval. Sigma Healthcare (ASX:SIG) increased annual revenue 15.5% to A$10.8 billion, helped by Chemist Warehouse sales. It is targeting A$100 million in yearly merger savings by FY29.

Orthocell (ASX:OCC) increased United States Remplir unit sales 25% in the September quarter and reached 79 hospitals. BLS Pharmaceuticals (ASX:BLS) reported record first-quarter revenue of A$26.7 million and positive operating cash flow. Yet both shares fell during the week. The price moves show that good operating news can be outweighed by wider selling, expectations already built into a share price, or concern about future spending. Pacific Edge (ASX:PEB) gained access to more United States insurers, but commercial test volumes still fell 13%.

Approvals, deals and shareholder votes

Ramsay Health Care (ASX:RHC) moved its Ramsay Santé separation closer to a shareholder vote after ASIC registered the demerger booklet. Holders will vote on 24 November. Genetic Signatures (ASX:GSS) will ask shareholders to approve the proposed Microba merger and the issue of up to 340.7 million shares and 129.7 million options. The vote is scheduled for 16 November.

CSL (ASX:CSL) appointed Deborah Waterhouse as chief executive from 1 February 2027, while also facing a shareholder class action over alleged disclosure failures. CSL denies the claims. Paradigm Biopharmaceuticals (ASX:PAR) asked the court for up to three more months to assess sale and recapitalisation proposals. Without more time, administrators say they would recommend liquidation. These cases carry different facts, but each places a future decision in front of shareholders, creditors or regulators.

Gaps reveal uneven conviction

Some shares that reopened after trading interruptions did not keep their initial move. Cleo Diagnostics (ASX:COV) held flat after reopening, despite positive early ovarian cancer test results. That suggests buyers did not continue bidding the price higher. Pacific Edge rose 5.56% from its reopening level, while Percheron Therapeutics (ASX:PER) gained 33.33%, showing sustained buying after their announcements. Other stocks moved lower after reopening, including Dimerix (ASX:DXB), Acrux and EBR Systems (ASX:EBR). Those falls show that early gains, or a previous price jump, can quickly evaporate when buyers do not return.

Bottom Line?

The next tests are close. Paradigm’s court hearing is set for 27 October, AdAlta’s FDA meeting is scheduled for 4 November, and Recce expects its independent Phase 3 review in mid-November. Shareholders will also vote on Genetic Signatures’ Microba deal on 16 November and Ramsay’s demerger on 24 November. Actinogen’s XanaMIA Alzheimer’s results are due in November. Investors will need to judge whether clinical progress and sales growth can arrive before cash balances, dilution and approval decisions become more urgent.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Recce’s mid-November review support continued testing or a move towards regulatory filings?
  • Can Paradigm secure more time and funding before its 27 October court hearing?
  • Will shareholder approval unlock the Genetic Signatures-Microba merger and Ramsay Santé separation?
