Argosy Minerals has completed FEL-3 preliminary engineering for the evaporation and crystallisation circuit at its 12,000tpa Rincon Lithium Project in Argentina. The work gives the company a more mature design basis for the project’s definitive feasibility study, but updated economics and financing remain outstanding.
- FEL-3 engineering package completed for Rincon’s evaporation and crystallisation circuit
- Process configuration, equipment sizing, heat and mass balances and plant layout defined
- Work followed lithium chloride crystallisation testing with recoveries exceeding 99%
- Deliverables will inform definitive feasibility study capital and operating cost estimates
- No updated project costs, financing or construction decision disclosed
Rincon Crystallisation Circuit Reaches Engineering Milestone
Argosy Minerals Limited (ASX:AGY) has completed a preliminary engineering package for the evaporation and crystallisation circuit at its 12,000-tonne-per-year Rincon Lithium Project in Salta Province, Argentina. The FEL-3 level work is a significant step in the company’s definitive feasibility study, moving the downstream process from testwork towards a defined commercial design.
The package established the process configuration and operating conditions for concentration, evaporation and crystallisation. It also produced process flow diagrams, heat and mass balance models, preliminary equipment sizing and specifications, electrical and control inputs, plus a three-dimensional plant layout for integration into the wider DFS.
Engineering Builds on More Than 99% Crystallisation Recoveries
The engineering work followed successful crystallisation testwork, which Argosy said achieved lithium chloride product recoveries exceeding 99%. The testing examined lithium chloride solubility, boiling point elevation, crystallisation behaviour and solid-liquid separation performance, providing the process data used to develop the design basis.
Argosy said the work was conducted by a globally recognised industrial evaporation and crystallisation technology provider with more than 1,200 installations worldwide. According to the company, the resulting design maturity should support equipment selection, process efficiency and plant operability while reducing technology and execution risk as the DFS advances.
DFS Economics Remain the Next Material Test
The immediate investment significance lies in what the engineering now enables rather than in a new production or financial forecast. Argosy said the deliverables will form a critical input to DFS-level capital and operating cost estimates, but the announcement does not provide those updated estimates, a financing package, a construction decision or a final development timetable.
The current Stage 1a development pathway is focused on producing high-purity lithium chloride solid or crystal, which Argosy says could offer lower upfront capital expenditure, a simpler flowsheet and greater flexibility for downstream lithium carbonate or hydroxide production. Those advantages remain company-stated objectives, not confirmed project outcomes. The 12,000tpa target is also subject to feasibility, financing, market conditions and completion of development works, with the company reiterating the resource and production-target cautions attached to its earlier modelling.
Bottom Line?
The crystallisation circuit is now better defined, but the decisive evidence will come with the completed DFS, including capital intensity, operating costs, financing and a credible construction pathway.
Questions in the middle?
- What capital and operating cost estimates will the completed DFS attach to the more mature process design?
- Can Argosy secure the financing and commercial partnerships needed to move from engineering into construction?
- Will the lithium chloride product pathway deliver the flexibility and economics claimed once full-scale project assumptions are tested?
