Azzuro’s Mongolian copper targets gain funding as Red Hill drilling moves deeper

Azzuro Resources has outlined conceptual exploration targets of up to 55 million tonnes across two Mongolian copper projects, while a strategic investment from Kerry Resources Logistics provides fresh funding for the next phase. The quarter also delivered high-grade Red Hill drilling, but the targets remain short of Mineral Resource status and quarter-end cash was only A$1.615 million.

  • Up to 30Mt at Red Hill grading 0.71% to 0.9% copper and 0.26g/t to 0.4g/t gold
  • Up to 25Mt at Oval grading 0.3% to 0.7% copper and 0.26% to 0.6% nickel
  • Red Hill drilling confirmed mineralisation over 550m of strike and to 150m depth
  • Kerry Resources invested A$3.06 million for a 19.9% enlarged stake
  • Quarter-end cash of A$1.615 million represented 1.41 quarters of funding before the placement

Azzuro secures funding behind two conceptual copper targets

Azzuro Resources PLC (ASX:AZ9) enters its next exploration phase with a more ambitious geological story and a more comfortable funding position. The Mongolian explorer has defined conceptual JORC (2012) Exploration Targets ranging from 15 million to 30 million tonnes at Red Hill and 6 million to 25 million tonnes at Oval, creating a combined arithmetic range of 21 million to 55 million tonnes across projects about 8 kilometres apart.

That headline scale comes with an important qualification: neither target is a Mineral Resource, and Azzuro says there has been insufficient exploration to estimate one. The company also warns that further exploration may not result in a Mineral Resource estimate. The targets are therefore markers for the next drilling campaign, not inventory that can yet be treated as an economic asset.

The immediate financial significance is the A$3.06 million placement completed after quarter end to Kerry Resources Logistics (Hong Kong) Limited, a member of the Kerry Mining group. Kerry received 203.875 million CHESS Depositary Interests at A$0.015 each, taking it to 19.9% of Azzuro’s enlarged share capital. The investment followed the Kerry strategic placement, which was reported as carrying a 7% premium to Azzuro’s pre-announcement share price.

Red Hill drilling confirms copper-gold continuity

Red Hill supplied the quarter’s most tangible exploration evidence. Azzuro completed 14 Phase 1 holes totalling 5,835 metres, confirming copper-gold volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralisation across roughly 550 metres of strike and to about 150 metres below surface. The system remains open to the east, west and down-dip.

Among the final assay results, a re-drill produced 5.0 metres at 4.92% copper, 0.94 grams per tonne gold, 5.05g/t silver and 0.41% zinc from 142.5 metres, including 2.0 metres at 11.95% copper, 1.99g/t gold, 11.80g/t silver and 0.78% zinc. A separate interval returned 1.9 metres at 6.80g/t gold and 67.30g/t silver from 49.9 metres. These are downhole lengths; true widths have not been determined.

The results extend the thread from Azzuro’s Red Hill drilling results, which had confirmed mineralisation over the same broad strike and depth envelope. Phase 2 drilling began in September, targeting shallow gold mineralisation north of the main sulphide zone before deeper drilling tests electromagnetic and gravity anomalies. Assays from the Phase 2 holes, including a newly identified 7.0-metre semi-massive to massive sulphide interval in MU2613A, were pending at quarter end.

Oval targets add scale but still require drill proof

At Oval, the maiden Exploration Target spans 6 million to 25 million tonnes grading 0.3% to 0.7% copper and 0.26% to 0.6% nickel, with gold, platinum, palladium and cobalt credits producing a stated range of 0.59% to 1.5% copper equivalent. The estimate covers five priority magnetic-inversion bodies within a mafic-ultramafic intrusion; drilling and surface sampling have intersected mineralisation near three of them.

A first-stage 3D induced polarisation survey identified nine anomaly trends, including five Priority 1 targets with coincident chargeability, low-resistivity and magnetic responses. The work builds on the Oval geophysical targets previously reported by Azzuro, but geophysical coincidence is still a targeting tool rather than proof of recoverable mineralisation. The company plans 10 holes totalling 4,085 metres at Oval, alongside four Red Hill holes totalling 1,750 metres to test the less drill-supported target bodies.

Cash runway improves after a tight quarter

Azzuro finished September with A$1.615 million in cash after using A$533,000 in operating activities and A$673,000 in investing activities during the quarter. Exploration and evaluation spending was A$616,000, while administration and corporate costs totalled A$384,000. On the Appendix 5B calculation, the company had 1.41 quarters of funding before considering the post-quarter-end placement.

The company says the Kerry proceeds will fund resource-definition drilling, metallurgical testwork, an initial commercial study at Red Hill and working capital. Preliminary flotation results are expected in the December quarter. The next test is whether those studies and the pending assays can convert geological potential into a JORC Inferred Mineral Resource, while Mongolia’s recently passed Minerals Law amendments remain subject to uncertainty because the final adopted text had not yet been published at the reporting date.

Bottom Line?

The placement gives Azzuro room to drill through its most important exploration window, but the investment case still depends on turning conceptual targets and pending assays into a defined resource.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Phase 2 assays confirm that Red Hill’s high-grade sulphide system extends beyond the current 550-metre strike envelope?
  • Can Oval’s five Priority 1 geophysical targets deliver enough mineralisation to support the conceptual Exploration Target?
  • How will the final Mongolian Minerals Law affect royalties, permitting and the economics of any future copper development?
