Lunnon Metals turns Lady Herial cash into a $13 million exploration push

Lunnon Metals has completed its first open pit broadly in line with feasibility expectations, lifting cash to $43 million and generating about $39 million in pre-tax free cash flow. The ASX-listed miner now faces a more speculative phase as it spends $13 million testing gold targets and weighs a possible return to nickel.

  • $43.0 million cash at 30 September, up from $22.2 million
  • Lady Herial produced 14,910 ounces with free cash flow within 3.5% of study estimates
  • No reported gold Ore Reserves remain after the pit’s depletion
  • $13 million FY2027 exploration program has drilled 9.9 kilometres
  • Hustler resource rises 20% to 36,200 ounces; nickel optionality rests on Gold Fields’ proposed concentrator acquisition

Lady Herial delivers its planned cash outcome

Lunnon Metals Limited (ASX:LM8) has finished mining at Lady Herial with the more valuable part of the exercise intact: cash. The company held $43.0 million at 30 September, compared with $22.2 million three months earlier, after receiving $35.1 million in unaudited revenue during the quarter and spending about $7.6 million on direct production costs.

The final numbers were close to the January 2026 Feasibility Study. Lady Herial produced 303,437 tonnes at 1.68 grams per tonne of gold and sold 14,910 ounces at 91% metallurgical recovery. Lunnon’s 70% share of pre-tax free cash flow was approximately $39.0 million, just 3.5% below the study estimate, while revenue reached $93.26 million against a forecast $92.54 million. The mine delivered more tonnes but at a lower grade, with operating costs 5.1% above forecast.

The result confirms the economics reported in the company’s Lady Herial cash outcome, which also highlighted approximately $39 million of pre-tax free cash flow. Mining was completed on 8 August, ahead of schedule, and rehabilitation at the eastern waste dump was already complete, with work on the western dump largely finished. The company reported no significant incidents during the open pit’s operating life, although an exploration-related lost-time injury occurred during the quarter.

Cash generation ends with no gold Ore Reserve

There is an important qualification to the cash headline. Lady Herial’s reported Ore Reserve has now been fully depleted, leaving Lunnon with no reported gold Ore Reserves as at the report date. The deposit still carries a post-mining Mineral Resource of 589,600 tonnes at 2.0 grams per tonne for 37,000 ounces, but that is a resource estimate rather than a mineable reserve.

The next possible source of production is still being worked through. Lunnon is updating the Lady Herial resource, including the potential LDH2 cut-back, alongside the Hustler model before completing a scoping study. Hustler’s resource stands at 826,000 tonnes at 1.4 grams per tonne for 36,200 ounces, a 20% increase, while recent drilling has produced high-grade hits including one metre at 80.80 grams per tonne. Those figures are encouraging, but development remains subject to studies, permitting and commercial discussions with Gold Fields’ St Ives operation.

Exploration becomes the central investment test

With no further Lady Herial revenue forecast, Lunnon is switching from production to discovery. Its $13 million FY2027 program drilled 9.9 kilometres in the September quarter, comprising 7,537 metres of reverse-circulation drilling and 2,349 metres of diamond drilling, against a full-year target of about 43.4 kilometres.

The company is testing a conceptual Foster-Baker Exploration Target of 25 million to 30 million tonnes containing a potential 1.2 million to 2.4 million ounces of gold. Lunnon stresses that the target is not a Mineral Resource and that further exploration may not result in additional resources. Early Benmore results nevertheless identified a 17.86-metre interval at 0.61 grams per tonne, within a broader sheared and altered zone that the company says resembles St Ives-style mineralisation. Further assays and drilling are required before its scale or continuity can be assessed.

The program has produced a more established result at Plentiful, where new intersections included 12 metres at 1.42 grams per tonne and 14 metres at 1.42 grams per tonne. The company has also continued work around Hustler and Koombana, building on the Plentiful drilling case and the earlier Hustler and Koombana results. A separate two-hole, 1,429-metre deep Plentiful program did not confirm its conceptual target, and no further work is planned there for now.

Gold Fields transaction revives nickel optionality

Lunnon’s nickel portfolio remains inactive on the ground, but a proposed change in local processing ownership has reopened a possible pathway. Gold Fields, which holds 29.61% of Lunnon through St Ives Gold Mining, has agreed to acquire BHP’s Kambalda Nickel Concentrator, subject to conditions including regulatory approvals and with completion indicated for calendar 2027.

Lunnon says it is assessing what the proposed acquisition could mean for its Foster-Baker assets. The project contains more than 95,000 tonnes of contained nickel in Mineral Resources, including the fully permitted Baker underground project with 33,700 tonnes of nickel metal in its stated resource. Gold Fields has said it will assess the concentrator’s potential for gold and nickel processing, but no commercial arrangement with Lunnon has been disclosed.

The next catalyst is execution, not production

Lunnon has bought itself time: the Lady Herial windfall funds the current exploration campaign without a capital raising, while the company retains potential development options at LDH2 and Hustler. The harder question is whether drilling can convert that financial runway into a new resource, a permitted pit or a credible nickel restart option before the cash balance begins doing the heavy lifting.

Bottom Line?

The balance sheet is now an asset, not a production engine. The next value test is whether FY2027 drilling and the LDH2-Hustler studies can replace Lady Herial’s depleted reserve base.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can the updated LDH2 and Hustler resource models support a commercially viable combined mining scenario?
  • Will Benmore drilling confirm continuity beyond its first encouraging but low-grade intersection?
  • Does Gold Fields’ proposed concentrator ownership lead to a practical processing pathway for Baker and Foster nickel?
