Dainen Agreement Reserves Up to 2,000 Tonnes a Year
Talga Group Ltd (ASX:TLG) has secured a binding framework with Japanese battery materials supplier Dainen Materials for up to 2,000 tonnes per annum of Talnode-C, marking a meaningful step from customer qualification towards longer-term commercial supply. The five-year term is expected to begin in late 2027, with extension rights included.
The agreement follows the July Dainen LOI and testing of Talnode-C against what Talga describes as the rigorous specifications of Dainen’s Japanese battery customers. The term sheet is binding on the capacity reservation, commercial framework and negotiation obligations, but not yet on final purchase volumes.
Japanese Qualification Supports Western Supply Position
Dainen supplies battery anode materials to major automotive, energy storage and electronics manufacturers, according to the announcement. Talga said the arrangement positions it as a Western supplier of traceable, low-emission natural graphite anode material for Japanese industry, while Dainen said it would continue qualifying Talnode-C with its customers.
Talga chief executive Martin Phillips described the agreement as evidence of Talnode-C’s maturation through years of testing and customer qualification. Dainen executive vice-president Daisuke Hayabara said the company was looking to work with Talga towards a definitive Master Supply Agreement and continued customer qualification.
Pricing Framework Includes ESG and Traceability Premium
Pricing will be denominated in US dollars on an EXW basis and linked to a negotiated price floor, plus a mutually agreed premium tied to the material being FEOC-free, its ESG characteristics and traceability. Talga disclosed neither a contract value nor a fixed price, leaving the commercial contribution of the reservation difficult to quantify at this stage.
Master Supply Agreement Targeted for March 2027
Both parties are bound to use commercially reasonable efforts to execute the definitive Master Supply Agreement by March 2027. That document is expected to settle the final purchase volumes, while deliveries are not expected to start until late 2027. The next test for Talga is therefore not the headline reservation itself, but whether the framework becomes a firm supply commitment aligned with available production capacity.
Bottom Line?
The Japanese contract framework is a commercial milestone, but its value will depend on final volumes, the March 2027 supply agreement and Talga’s ability to deliver from late 2027.
Questions in the middle?
- What final purchase volumes will Dainen and its customers commit to under the Master Supply Agreement?
- Will Talga secure the targeted agreement by March 2027 without changes to the commercial framework?
- Can Talnode-C production capacity be ready for the expected late-2027 delivery start?
