WA1’s Luni drilling strengthens the case for a Q4 niobium study

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

WA1 Resources has reported further high-grade niobium intersections at Luni as it works towards completing its Pre-Feasibility Study this quarter. The project enters its next phase with A$113.2 million in cash, a commissioned airstrip and key 2026 fieldwork largely complete.

  • Multiple high-grade Luni intersections, including 21.4m at 7.4% Nb₂O₅
  • 220Mt Mineral Resource remains unchanged at 1.0% Nb₂O₅
  • PFS remains scheduled for completion in Q4 CY2026
  • Airstrip commissioned to improve access to the remote project
  • A$113.2 million cash balance and 9.13 quarters of reported funding

High-grade drilling tightens Luni’s development picture

WA1 Resources Ltd (ASX:WA1) is heading into the final stretch of its Luni niobium study with another batch of strong drill results, including a 21.4-metre intersection grading 7.4% Nb₂O₅ and a 10.2-metre interval at 6.1% Nb₂O₅. Other reported results included 38.0 metres at 3.8%, 25.4 metres at 3.3% and 24.2 metres at 3.1% Nb₂O₅.

The results add definition to the eastern high-grade area identified as a potential source of feed during Luni’s early mining years. They follow the company’s eastern-zone drilling results, which had earlier outlined broad, high-grade intersections and supported the push towards greater resource confidence.

Existing 220Mt resource supports the Q4 PFS

WA1 said integrated workstreams for the Pre-Feasibility Study remain on track for completion in Q4 CY2026. The current Luni Mineral Resource Estimate stands at 220 million tonnes grading 1.0% Nb₂O₅, including 93Mt at 1.32% in the Indicated category and a high-grade subset of 35Mt at 2.57%.

The drilling program has now covered about 93,000 metres, with work focused largely on the weathered zone and designed to improve confidence in the deposit’s geometry, thickness, mineralogy and grade distribution. WA1 said the results are expected to inform a future resource update and could support conversion of a substantial part of the high-grade zone into the Measured category. Deeper primary mineralisation remains a target for future drilling, so the current picture is not yet the whole geological story.

Metallurgy and site access move in parallel

Metallurgical work during the quarter continued to produce what WA1 described as excellent characteristics, with particularly strong outcomes from the eastern focus area. Those results are being used across mine planning, process design, downstream refining and conversion, and product development. The company’s July resource and testwork update had previously reported an expanded Indicated resource and encouraging beneficiation results.

The remote project also gained a practical piece of infrastructure during the quarter: the Luni airstrip was commissioned in July, enabling regular direct flights. WA1 said this should improve the safety and efficiency of mobilising personnel and carrying out exploration and pre-development work. Its 2026 field program is now complete, with the company saying data collection extended beyond the immediate PFS requirements and provides a base for 2027 planning.

Cash position leaves room for continued study work

WA1 held A$113.197 million in cash at 30 September, down from A$123.799 million at the previous quarter-end. Exploration and evaluation spending totalled A$10.654 million for the quarter, while development-related expenditure was A$464,322. The Appendix 5B calculation puts available funding at 9.13 quarters based on its reported relevant outgoings, a mechanical measure rather than a project funding forecast.

Environmental and permitting work is continuing alongside the technical studies, while no on-ground exploration took place at the broader West Arunta or Madura projects during the quarter. The immediate test is whether the Q4 PFS can turn a growing geological and metallurgical dataset into a credible development case, without the next phase bringing materially higher capital demands or new approval constraints.

Bottom Line?

The Q4 PFS is the next decisive checkpoint: it must translate strong eastern-zone geology and testwork into an investable development pathway.

Questions in the middle?

  • What resource confidence and mine-plan changes will emerge from the next Luni update?
  • How will the PFS frame capital, processing and infrastructure requirements?
  • Can environmental and permitting work keep pace with the technical studies and 2027 field program?
