Control Bionics begins turning its neurotechnology pipeline into revenue

Control Bionics has begun converting its expanded product and regulatory pipeline into revenue, while a completed $9.75 million capital raising gives the company a larger cash buffer. The next test is whether partner-led sales and NeuroStrip trial conversions can reduce its cash burn as planned.

  • $5.8 million cash at 30 September after $9.75 million capital raising
  • First NextLevel OMNI revenue recognised in September following Medicare PDAC approval
  • NeuroStrip trials more than doubled, with four paying customers
  • Management forecasts 50% FY27 revenue growth and no further raise before cash flow breakeven
  • Net operating cash outflow was $2.8 million, including $0.8 million of non-recurring payments

First NextLevel OMNI Revenue Arrives as Cash Buffer Builds

Control Bionics Limited (ASX:CBL) has moved from product preparation to early commercial delivery, reporting first September revenue from its NextLevel OMNI speech-generating device and a cash balance of A$5.8 million at quarter-end. The improved balance sheet followed completion of a A$9.75 million capital raising at 7.5 cents a share, although the company still recorded A$2.8 million of net operating cash outflow during the September quarter.

Unaudited revenue grew in each month of the quarter and exceeded the June quarter, according to the company. Customer receipts remained broadly flat at A$1.0 million because the revenue improvement was weighted towards September and is expected to flow through to receipts in the December quarter.

The capital raising, which included the completed $9.75 million capital raising, settled its second tranche on 11 August. Control Bionics used part of the proceeds to repay a A$400,000 R&D loan facility before receiving its A$440,531 FY26 R&D tax incentive refund in early October. Management says the current operating plan funds the business through FY27 without another raise before cash flow breakeven.

Medicare Code Opens NextLevel OMNI Funding Pathway

NextLevel OMNI secured its Medicare PDAC code on 27 August, establishing a Medicare and insurance funding pathway in the United States. Shipping began during the quarter and the first revenue was recognised in September, with volumes expected to increase from October through funded partners.

The commercial model depends heavily on trained consultants rather than simply signed distribution agreements. PRC-Saltillo trained nine additional consultants in August, while Tobii Dynavox expanded its NeuroNode rollout into more US states. Control Bionics says a newly trained partner consultant typically takes about one quarter to deliver a first funded sale, and expects wholesale revenue to become the dominant share of total revenue in the December quarter.

NeuroStrip Reaches European Regulatory Milestone

NeuroStrip also made progress on both regulation and customer adoption. The surface EMG device was registered with the US FDA and UK MHRA in August, following the FDA registration for NeuroStrip reported earlier in the year, and received its European Union CE mark after quarter-end. A TGA application remains pending.

Approximately 80 organisations are now engaged with NeuroStrip, up from about 20 in July, including around 30 organisations in live trials and four paying customers. Customer sessions reached 282 across 28 organisations during the quarter, up 103% on the June quarter. The company plans to report the first cohort conversion outcomes in the December quarter, making the shift from trials to paid use a more concrete test of commercial traction.

Cash Burn Still Depends on the Planned Revenue Ramp

Operating cash outflow included roughly A$800,000 of payments that Control Bionics does not expect to recur in FY27, including FY26 short-term incentives accrued at 30 June and other one-off items. The Appendix 4C calculates 2.1 quarters of funding using the quarter's A$2.752 million operating cash outflow and the A$5.792 million closing cash balance, before taking account of the October tax refund.

That arithmetic is more demanding than the company's forward plan. Management expects outflows to fall materially as NextLevel OMNI volumes rise, NeuroNode partners begin generating funded sales, the German Tobii Dynavox rollout develops and NeuroStrip trials convert into paying customers. It has reaffirmed a target of 50% FY27 revenue growth, weighted to the second half, and expects the Assistive Communication business to be profitable on a monthly basis during the first half of FY27. The December quarter will show whether those assumptions are beginning to appear in receipts rather than only in the pipeline.

Bottom Line?

The balance sheet has bought Control Bionics time, but the next quarter needs to show partner shipments and NeuroStrip trials translating into cash receipts.

Questions in the middle?

  • How quickly will trained US and German partner consultants produce funded NeuroNode and NextLevel OMNI sales?
  • How many of the approximately 30 live NeuroStrip trials will convert into paying customers in the December quarter?
  • Can operating cash outflows fall fast enough to support the FY27 growth plan without another capital raising?
