Orbit’s Lewis Ponds drilling opens several paths to resource growth

Orbit Resources has extended its Lewis Ponds exploration story with new sulphide intersections, an out-of-resource Quarry Lode result and improved metallurgical prospects. The progress comes alongside a cash balance of A$1.743 million, equivalent to just 0.89 quarters of funding at the reported expenditure rate.

  • 21.4m of visually identified sulphides intersected at Tom’s Lode, with assays pending
  • Quarry Lode returned 27m at 0.97g/t AuEq outside the existing resource and Scoping Study pit
  • Metallurgical modelling indicated lead concentrate grades could rise from about 33% to above 60%
  • Goodrich partner drilling delivered 136.55m at 0.32% copper and 0.16g/t gold
  • A$1.743m cash balance equated to 0.89 quarters of funding at quarter-end

Lewis Ponds drilling pushes beyond the existing resource

Orbit Resources Limited (ASX:OBT) is advancing its Lewis Ponds drilling program on several fronts, but the September quarter also exposed the usual junior-miner tension: exploration momentum is building faster than the cash balance. Orbit held A$1.743 million in cash at 30 September, with the Appendix 5B indicating 0.89 quarters of funding at the reported rate of net operating outflows.

The exploration results are encouraging, though some of the most prominent intersections remain visual estimates rather than laboratory results. At Tom’s Lode, hole GLPDD011 intersected 21.4 metres of visually identified sulphide mineralisation across two zones, including 12.9 metres of approximately 20% semi-massive sulphides. Assays for GLPDD010, GLPDD011 and GLPDD012 are expected in the December quarter, making laboratory results the next test of whether the visible sulphides translate into economically meaningful grades.

Orbit’s earlier placeholder

More concrete data came from Quarry Lode, where GLPRCDD001 returned 27 metres at 0.97g/t gold equivalent from 83 metres, including 10 metres at 1.44g/t gold equivalent. Quarry Lode sits west of the Lewis Ponds deposit, outside both the current 17.52 million tonne Mineral Resource Estimate and the open pit outlined in the Scoping Study. Orbit said it intends to assess the lode for inclusion in a future resource update.

Metallurgy points to a higher-grade lead concentrate

Mineralogical work supplied a second potential lever for the project. Orbit identified talc as the dominant non-sulphide gangue mineral entering the lead concentrate and modelled a pre-flotation stage that could lift the theoretical lead concentrate grade from about 33% to above 60%, without materially affecting lead recovery. The modelling also indicated that silver and copper are largely hosted in sulphide minerals reporting to the lead concentrate, although the company cautioned that the sample size was insufficient to assess gold directly.

At Cousin Jack, downhole electromagnetic surveying recorded conductivity of up to 1,500 Siemens, supporting further use of EM across the 1.6-kilometre IP trend. Orbit also completed a high-resolution drone magnetic survey across Lewis Ponds and its broader exploration corridor. A ground EM survey over the Cousin Jack trend is planned for the December quarter, while GLPDD013 was underway at quarter-end targeting Spicer’s Lode.

Goodrich adds partner-funded copper-gold exposure

The broader portfolio delivered a substantial copper-gold intercept at Goodrich, where partner-funded hole GGDD004 returned 136.55 metres at 0.32% copper, 0.16g/t gold and 43g/t molybdenum from 81.45 metres. The interval included 26 metres at 0.52% copper and 0.24g/t gold. Great Plains Metals has earned a 51% interest in the Yeoval-Goodrich joint venture and is proceeding towards a potential 70% interest by committing a further $1 million to exploration over 12 months, leaving Orbit with 49% exposure while retaining operatorship at the partner’s request.

Matrix IPO advances as funding pressure remains visible

Orbit also continued preparing the proposed separation of its Narraburra rare earths project into Matrix Critical Minerals. Matrix is seeking $8 million to $12 million at $0.20 per share, while Orbit intends to distribute 50 million Matrix shares to eligible shareholders if the transaction receives approval and Matrix gains ASX admission. The structure was detailed in the Matrix IPO opening, which reported that the offer included priority access for eligible Orbit shareholders.

Shareholders are due to consider the Matrix transaction and the related equal capital reduction at meetings on 5 November. The proposal remains conditional on shareholder approval and completion of the listing process. Meanwhile, Orbit reported A$1.954 million of net operating cash outflows for the quarter, including IPO-related costs. Management said those costs should reduce significantly and that Matrix would reimburse agreed costs if the listing succeeds; it also cited discretionary spending controls and potential future equity funding as ways to continue operations if required.

The immediate catalysts are therefore unusually clear: assays from the Lewis Ponds drilling, completion of the Spicer’s Lode hole, interpretation of the new geophysical data and the outcome of the Matrix shareholder vote. The geological case may strengthen if the visual sulphide zones carry useful grades, but the funding case still depends on cost reductions, a successful Matrix process or access to new capital.

Bottom Line?

Lewis Ponds offers several near-term exploration catalysts, but assays and the Matrix process will need to arrive before Orbit’s sub-one-quarter cash runway becomes the dominant story.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will assays from Tom’s Lode and Quarry Lode support a material expansion of the Lewis Ponds resource?
  • Can the Matrix IPO complete in time to reduce the funding pressure created by Orbit’s 0.89-quarter cash runway?
  • Will the Cousin Jack EM and magnetic results generate drill targets capable of extending the broader sulphide system?
