US$1.5 million sales and 0.3 quarters of funding mark Alexium’s September quarter

Advanced materials manufacturing By Victor Sage 4 min read

Alexium has lifted production efficiency and September revenue, but ended the quarter with only US$337,000 of cash and available funding. The company remains dependent on further shareholder loans while targeting positive operating cash flow in June 2027.

  • September revenue of approximately US$0.7 million at a 36% gross margin
  • Quarterly sales rose to US$1.5 million from US$1.2 million
  • Dayton first-pass quality exceeded 90% by September
  • US$1.1 million of new shareholder loans received during the quarter
  • Only US$337,000 of cash and unused facilities remained at quarter end

Cash runway remains Alexium’s immediate constraint

Alexium International Group Limited (ASX:AJX) improved its manufacturing performance and built revenue momentum during the September quarter, but its funding position remains stark: just US$337,000 of cash and unused credit capacity was available at quarter end. On the quarter’s US$1.223 million net operating cash outflow, that equates to an estimated 0.3 quarters of funding.

The company received US$1.1 million in new loans during the quarter from entities associated with directors Simon Moore, James Williamson and Martyn Strickland. Those shareholder loans helped lift financing cash inflows to US$1.355 million, but the support is not legally binding and carries no specified maximum amount. Alexium also retained only about US$2,000 of undrawn availability under its Alterna Capital Solutions asset-based facility, after US$622,000 was drawn against a US$624,000 borrowing base. The company’s earlier experience of tighter funding conditions also involved negative cash flow and limited available funding.

Dayton turnaround lifts quality and capacity

Operationally, the quarter offered a more encouraging picture. By September, Alexium said its Dayton plant was operating at materially higher efficiency and capacity than at the start of the quarter, with first-pass quality above 90%. Almost the entire product range has now been consolidated into the facility, ahead of the company’s year-end target.

A new plant manager, working under chief operating officer Randy Lane, was credited with contributing to improved reliability and performance. The filing also says product returns of approximately US$330,000 over the five months to 30 September resulted from a production issue at Dayton. Corrective work has significantly reduced returns, although the company said the issue is not yet fully resolved and that the latest shipments had not generated further returns.

Revenue improves as commercial programs advance

Quarterly sales rose to US$1.5 million from US$1.2 million in the June quarter, with revenue building through the period. September was the strongest month at approximately US$700,000, when gross margin reached 36%.

Alexium said it is concentrating on cash-generative programs with bedding manufacturers and component partners. The quarter included repeat orders for phase change material products, first shipments under a new mattress ticking program and the sale of its AlexiShield flame-retardant coating, which the company described as its first furniture-market placement. A full-scale production trial of its foam coating with a major original equipment manufacturer is scheduled for November.

New products move towards customer qualification

The product pipeline is also moving beyond laboratory and development work. A high-solids cooling coating for foam has entered customer qualification after testing for usability, durability and cooling performance. EcoTek 29, a biodegradable microencapsulated phase change material, has secured its first commercial order from an international customer, while large-scale flame-retardant burn testing of AlexiShield continues in latex foam applications.

Positive cash flow target still depends on execution

Management expects net operating cash outflows to continue through at least the March 2027 quarter, before a transition to positive operating cash flow in the June 2027 quarter. That expectation rests on rising sales, lower product returns, improved manufacturing performance and better gross margins, alongside continued funding from major shareholders and directors.

The company’s cash position gives it little room for slippage. Shareholder lenders have indicated they intend to support Alexium through the sales ramp-up, but those indications are non-binding. The next meaningful test will be whether improved Dayton output and customer qualification translate into collections quickly enough to reduce reliance on that support before the company reaches its stated cash-flow target.

Bottom Line?

Alexium’s operational recovery is visible, but the June 2027 cash-flow target remains dependent on sales conversion, lower returns and continued non-binding shareholder support.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the November foam-coating production trial convert into recurring customer revenue?
  • Can improved Dayton quality eliminate product returns quickly enough to reduce working-capital pressure?
  • How much further shareholder funding will be required before positive operating cash flow is reached?
