Positive operating cash flow arrives alongside a thin cash buffer
Arbitr Group Limited (ASX:AGT) produced NZ$0.34 million of net operating cash in the September quarter, a modest but important improvement after the company absorbed NZ$0.86 million in one-off fraud-related, forensic, remediation and restructuring costs. Customer cash receipts rose to NZ$9.25 million from NZ$8.82 million in the June quarter, while quarterly revenue was NZ$6.6 million.
The cash result was not enough to prevent the balance sheet from shrinking. Arbitr finished 30 September with NZ$2.158 million in cash, down from NZ$2.589 million three months earlier, after NZ$0.590 million of investing outflows, NZ$0.148 million of financing outflows and a NZ$0.029 million foreign-exchange impact. The company reported no loan, credit standby or other financing facilities.
Fraud losses confirmed at approximately NZ$9 million
The company said its forensic investigation into the misappropriation of funds by a former US employee is complete, with total losses confirmed at approximately NZ$9 million, or US$5.2 million. Arbitr paid NZ$0.8 million in investigation costs during the quarter, included in the Appendix 4C’s other operating cash outflows. The filing does not quantify any potential recovery of the missing funds.
Arbitr said it has revised banking mandates, strengthened segregation of duties and tightened access to finance systems. Grant Straker resigned as a director during the quarter, while Amanda Cribb moved from non-executive director to chief financial officer. Those changes sit alongside a broader effort to repair controls, but the next quarterly reports will show whether exceptional costs have genuinely receded.
IBM alliance and customer migration underpin the AI pivot
The company is repositioning itself as an enterprise AI platform business, centred on an Enterprise AI Context Engine intended to help organisations govern access to internal knowledge, systems and data. During the quarter, Arbitr reached IBM Platinum Partner Plus status, the highest tier in IBM’s Partner Plus programme, giving it access to IBM’s technical, go-to-market and co-selling ecosystem.
Migration of its Language Cloud customers to Arbitr began in September and is expected to be completed by the end of the December quarter. Arbitr reported a 68% gross margin and NZ$4.7 million of operating expenses for the period, but did not provide a comparative quarterly revenue figure or detailed customer concentration data. The key test is whether the migration and IBM relationship translate into repeatable enterprise growth without rebuilding the cost base faster than cash receipts can support it.
Bottom Line?
Arbitr has demonstrated positive operating cash flow, but the NZ$2.16 million cash balance leaves little room for another large exceptional charge or a slower AI transition.
Questions in the middle?
- Will fraud-related investigation, remediation and restructuring costs fall materially in the December quarter?
- Can the Language Cloud migration and IBM partnership produce higher recurring revenue and cash generation?
- Does Arbitr expect any recovery from the approximately NZ$9 million misappropriation loss, and will it need new funding if growth investment continues?
