Galan Keeps Q4 Lithium Sales Target Alive as HMW Expansion Begins

Mining By Maxwell Dee 4 min read

Galan Lithium says first lithium chloride concentrate sales from Hombre Muerto West remain on track for Q4 2026, with plant data supporting the planned product quality. Earthworks have also started to lift Phase 1 capacity to 5.2ktpa, although development spending leaves the company with a measured funding runway under its Appendix 5B calculation.

  • First lithium chloride concentrate sales targeted for Q4 2026
  • Nanofiltration records at least 98% sulphate rejection over three months
  • 4ktpa LCE throughput targeted for H1 2027
  • Earthworks commence for 5.2ktpa Phase 1 expansion
  • A$25.4 million cash, no debt drawn and 2.38 quarters of funding under Appendix 5B

HMW Ramp-Up Holds Its Sales Timeline

Galan Lithium Limited (ASX:GLN) has kept its most important near-term milestone intact: first lithium chloride concentrate sales from Hombre Muerto West in Argentina remain targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. The update comes as the company moves from commissioning into the more exacting phase of proving that the operation can sustain commercial throughput.

The nanofiltration plant has now produced more than three months of operating data, recording at least 98% sulphate rejection. Galan says the impurity separation and recoveries achieved so far support upgrading the lithium chloride concentrate to the targeted 6% lithium content. The company previously reported that the HMW commissioning milestone had been completed, with optimisation then underway.

Seasonal Conditions Remain Central to Throughput

Galan is targeting an initial throughput rate equivalent to 4,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year in the first half of calendar 2027, as warmer conditions improve evaporation rates in the high-altitude Puna region. The company said operations continued safely through what it described as one of the region’s most severe winters on record, despite snowfall, wind and short operational suspensions.

That weather experience has also prompted a planned addition: more pressure-vessel capacity to improve resilience during future winters. It is a practical reminder that the production timetable depends not only on the plant itself, but also on the seasonal conditions governing the brine operation.

5.2ktpa Expansion Starts Before First Sales

Earthworks have commenced for an expansion of Phase 1 from 4ktpa to 5.2ktpa LCE, with the higher production volumes targeted for the second half of 2027. Galan says the existing nanofiltration plant has enough design flexibility to support the expansion without plant modifications.

The company also retains construction permits for a 21ktpa Phase 2 and describes a staged pathway towards as much as 60ktpa LCE. Those longer-term ambitions remain plans rather than current production, making the next useful test the conversion of the Q4 sales target into repeatable output and cash receipts.

Cash Position Stronger Than Appendix Runway Implies

Galan ended September with A$25.388 million in cash and cash equivalents, no debt drawn and an undrawn US$6 million offtake prepayment facility. The quarter consumed A$9.872 million on exploration and evaluation activities, alongside A$816,000 in net operating cash outflows. On the Appendix 5B calculation, that spending rate equates to 2.38 quarters of available funding, with no unused finance facilities recorded in the formal table.

That is not an immediate liquidity warning, but it does put execution and financing in the same frame. The company is spending to ramp HMW and expand the ponds before sales are established, while the timing and scale of future cash inflows remain dependent on first product shipments and the subsequent production ramp.

Bottom Line?

The next decisive evidence will be whether Q4 concentrate sales arrive on schedule and begin to offset the cash demands of the 5.2ktpa expansion.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will first lithium chloride concentrate sales occur in Q4 2026, and at what initial volume?
  • Can HMW reach 4ktpa LCE throughput in H1 2027 after the severe winter operating period?
  • How will Galan fund development spending if the production ramp or cash receipts take longer than planned?
