Morella’s Mt Edon resource opens a bigger rubidium campaign

Mining By Maxwell Dee 6 min read

Morella Corporation Limited (ASX:1MC) has put a maiden 5.44 million tonne Inferred resource at Mt Edon on the books, but entered the next phase with only A$555,000 in cash and an estimated 0.7 quarters of funding. Mac Well exploration and a proposed Elevra portfolio expansion add upside, while further drilling and metallurgical work remain unfunded beyond the near term.

  • 5.44Mt Mt Edon Inferred resource at 0.16% Rb₂O
  • Approximately 8,300 tonnes of contained Rb₂O
  • Mac Well rock chip peak of 0.78% Rb₂O and 0.71% Li₂O
  • Proposed A$300,000 Morella-Elevra earn-in remains subject to documentation
  • A$555,000 cash balance and 0.7 quarters of estimated funding

Mt Edon resource establishes scale, not yet economics

Morella has reached the geological milestone it spent much of 2026 pursuing: a maiden JORC 2012 Inferred Mineral Resource of 5.44 million tonnes at 0.16% Rb₂O at its Mt Edon project in Western Australia, containing approximately 8,300 tonnes of rubidium oxide. The estimate covers the Sophie and Miles & June prospects and is reported above a 0.10% Rb₂O cut-off.

The resource gives Morella a formal inventory in a specialised critical mineral, following drilling that defined broad, near-surface mineralisation across roughly 500 metres at Sophie and 250 metres at Miles & June. The estimate remains open beyond the current footprint, and the company says mapped pegmatites outside the resource area could support future step-out drilling. The earlier maiden Mt Edon resource had already put the 8,300-tonne figure before the market, but this quarterly report frames it as the foundation for the next technical phase rather than a development decision.

That distinction matters. The resource is Inferred, the lowest-confidence JORC resource category, and is not intended to support local selective mining decisions. Rubidium is the sole economic product in the current reasonable-prospects assessment: lithium and tantalum have been identified as possible additional value, but neither has been included economically pending further metallurgical and development work. The RPEEE assessment used an assumed US$400 per kilogram price for rubidium carbonate, explicitly not a forecast realised price.

Metallurgy and Mac Well widen the exploration story

Laboratory work at Edith Cowan University has achieved rubidium extraction of up to 93.6% into solution. Morella cautions that this is laboratory-scale extraction, not an overall process recovery or evidence of commercial viability. Its RPEEE assessment assumes a 68% overall rubidium process recovery, with further optimisation, purification and flowsheet development still required.

At Mac Well, 21 of 27 rock chip samples exceeded 0.1% Rb₂O, including eight above 0.3%. The strongest sample returned 0.78% Rb₂O and 0.71% Li₂O. Those are surface exploration results rather than a resource, but they have prompted plans for further mapping and sampling ahead of a possible maiden drilling programme. Morella also plans follow-up work at Dixon Well, while no field exploration was undertaken in its Nevada portfolio during the quarter.

Portfolio expansion remains conditional

Morella has also outlined a proposed expansion of its joint venture with Elevra Lithium Limited (ASX:ELV), adding four Western Australian projects including the gold prospects Mt Dove and Deep Well. Under the indicative, non-binding terms, Morella would earn a 51% interest by spending A$300,000 on qualifying exploration over two years and would manage the projects. The arrangement remains subject to due diligence, definitive documentation and any required approvals.

The proposed earn-in broadens the portfolio, but it also creates another call on a company whose immediate funding position is tight. Morella reported A$555,000 in cash at 30 September after a quarterly net cash decrease of A$809,000. Relevant quarterly outgoings were A$776,000, comprising A$391,000 of operating cash use and A$385,000 of exploration and evaluation expenditure. The Appendix 5B therefore calculates only 0.7 quarters of available funding, with no unused finance facilities.

Funding is now the immediate constraint

The company has A$4.945 million drawn under related-party facilities, carrying an 8% annual interest rate. One facility matures in March 2027 and another in August 2028; both can be converted into shares at the lender’s option subject to regulatory approvals. Morella also disclosed quarterly payments of A$60,000 in directors’ fees and A$50,000 in interest on a funding facility.

Management said it can vary exploration intensity and expects further capital will be required during the year. The board said it expects to raise that capital based on previous funding outcomes, but the filing does not establish the timing, structure or terms of any future raise. That leaves Mt Edon’s next value test, including infill drilling, higher-confidence resource work and metallurgical optimisation, running alongside a more basic question: how much of the programme can be funded before dilution or additional debt becomes necessary?

Bottom Line?

Mt Edon has supplied Morella with a meaningful technical platform, but the 0.7-quarter cash estimate makes funding the next drilling and metallurgical steps the near-term test.

Questions in the middle?

  • When will Morella secure the additional capital it says will be required, and on what terms?
  • Can follow-up drilling convert part of the Inferred Mt Edon resource into a higher-confidence category?
  • Will laboratory rubidium extraction translate into a recoverable, saleable product at commercial scale?
