Tlou funding pressure delays grid connection after Lesedi 6 shutdown
Tlou Energy has temporarily shut Lesedi 6 after recurring coal-fines inflows and pump inefficiencies, leaving Lesedi 4 to carry ongoing production testing. Kala Data Centre remains at proof-of-concept scale while Tlou holds just A$57,000 in unaudited cash and seeks funding for its next development phase.

Lesedi 6 Shut as Coal Fines Disrupt Production Testing
Tlou Energy Limited (ASX:TOU) has temporarily shut Lesedi 6 after recurring coal-fines influxes and pump inefficiencies complicated production testing at its Botswana gas-to-power project. The decision leaves Lesedi 4 as the active focus for well-performance monitoring, with the company collecting data to assess potential gas supply for a future expansion of the Kala Data Centre.
The operational setback matters because Tlou’s growth plan depends on a chain that must work in sequence: coal bed methane production, gas gathering, power generation and ultimately electricity sales. During the quarter, testing and dewatering continued at both wells, but the company said significant coal fines affected well operations. It has not stated when Lesedi 6 might restart.
Kala Remains a Proof-of-Concept Operation
Kala continued operating on electricity generated at Lesedi, but only at proof-of-concept scale. The update therefore preserves the technical milestone described in the company’s Kala proof-of-concept launch, rather than marking a move into sustained commercial-scale output.
Tlou is assessing operational improvements and the additional generation and infrastructure required to expand Kala. Solar generation remains under consideration as a supplement during periods of lower gas availability, with an initial 5MW development and storage options still subject to technical and commercial assessment, funding and approvals. There is no binding solar agreement in place.
Grid Connection Stalls Behind Funding Requirement
The Lesedi substation is approximately 90% complete, but remaining construction has been deferred pending funding. Once finished, it is intended to connect on-site gas-fired and solar generation to the grid, enabling potential grid-based electricity sales.
That unfinished infrastructure sits alongside the same financing pressure that accompanied Tlou’s earlier Lesedi hybrid power plans, which included a proposed solar build and a substation nearing completion. Tlou now says further funding is required for material development activities, while discussions with prospective financiers and strategic partners continue.
Cash Position Leaves Little Room for Delay
Tlou reported approximately A$57,000 in unaudited cash at 30 September, after a net operating cash outflow of A$201,000 and investing outflows of A$237,000 during the quarter. Financing activities contributed A$370,000. The company had drawn A$7.13 million from its A$10 million shareholder loan facility, leaving approximately A$2.87 million available; its summary table gives available funding as A$2.93 million.
The shareholder facility is described as support for operating expenditure and a bridge while Tlou pursues additional capital. The immediate test is whether the company can keep Lesedi 4 operating, resolve the Lesedi 6 production issues and finish the substation before its funding position becomes the limiting factor on Kala’s expansion.
Bottom Line?
The next meaningful proof point is not another planning update, but reliable gas performance at Lesedi 4, a credible funding pathway and progress on the unfinished substation.
Questions in the middle?
- Can Lesedi 4 demonstrate sustainable gas flow sufficient to support a larger Kala operation?
- What technical changes or funding would be required to restart Lesedi 6?
- Can Tlou secure additional capital before the remaining substation works and proposed solar development face further delay?
