Western Gold expands Gold Duke target as development case strengthens

Mining By Maxwell Dee 5 min read

Western Gold Resources has lifted Gold Duke’s Production Target by 62% to 59.7koz of contained gold, strengthening the project’s development case. But the company still needs a processing solution and reports only about 1.56 quarters of funding on current outgoings.

  • Production Target rises to 1.11Mt at 1.7g/t Au for 59.7koz of contained gold
  • Gold Duke Mineral Resource totals 4.84Mt at 1.8g/t Au for 277koz
  • A$72.9 million operating surplus forecast before capital, financing and tax at A$6,100/oz
  • Wiluna tolling remains deferred while alternative processing routes are assessed
  • A$1.74 million cash balance leaves approximately 1.56 quarters of funding on current outgoings

Gold Duke Production Target climbs to 59.7koz

Western Gold Resources Limited (ASX:WGR) has materially enlarged the proposed Gold Duke development, with its Expanded Scoping Study lifting the Production Target by approximately 62% to 1.11 million tonnes at 1.7 grams per tonne gold for 59.7koz of contained gold. The target compares with 686,000 tonnes at 2.1g/t Au for 46.0koz in the September 2025 study.

At an assumed 93% metallurgical recovery, the study forecasts approximately 55.5koz of recovered or payable gold. The company also estimates an A$72.9 million operating surplus before project-level capital, financing and tax, using a gold price assumption of A$6,100 per ounce. The study’s production case was previously reported as a larger mine plan built around Gold Duke’s expanded resource in the September study expansion.

Higher-confidence resource supports expanded mine plan

Gold Duke’s Mineral Resource stands at 4.84Mt at 1.8g/t Au for 277koz, including 1.60Mt of Measured material at 1.6g/t Au for 81koz and 450,000 tonnes of Indicated material for 23koz. Measured and Indicated Resources total 2.05Mt at 1.6g/t Au for 104koz.

The estimate incorporates 33,980 metres of close-spaced grade control and infill drilling, predominantly on a 5-metre by 10-metre pattern. The company says Measured Resources rose from 3koz in June 2025 to 81koz after the drilling and associated geological work. Approximately 82% of the Expanded Scoping Study Production Target comes from Measured and Indicated Resources, although the study remains a preliminary assessment and its Production Target includes inferred material. The resource confidence upgrade was detailed in the Gold Duke resource upgrade.

Wiluna tolling deferral leaves processing plan unresolved

The central practical obstacle has not disappeared. Wiluna Mining Corporation has deferred third-party tolling activities at its mill, prompting WGR to engage alternative processing counterparties, including operators of existing plants within economic haulage distance. WGR is also assessing whether it can secure a processing solution under its own control.

The company’s binding toll milling agreement with Wiluna remains in place and WGR describes the deferment as temporary, but no replacement processing arrangement is disclosed in this report. Gold Duke’s development model continues to rely on conventional shallow open-pit mining and toll treatment at the Wiluna Processing Plant, about 46 kilometres away. The processing issue has already prompted WGR to reopen Gold Duke processing, but the December-quarter plan is still to advance alternatives rather than announce a settled pathway.

Loan extension provides time but not a fully funded build

WGR ended September with A$1.743 million in cash after net operating cash outflow of A$1.047 million and exploration and evaluation spending of A$604,000 for the quarter. Its Appendix 5B calculates approximately 1.56 quarters of funding based on relevant quarterly outgoings of A$1.115 million. The company says costs are expected to reduce before mining begins and that it is assessing further capital requirements, including potential equity injections and extensions to loan facilities.

The secured non-converting loan facility remains A$3 million, with A$1.257 million drawn. Its repayment date has been extended to 18 months from the 1 September 2025 advance date. The variation also provides for 9 million second-tranche options to lenders, subject to shareholder approval, with a 12.5-cent exercise price, alongside 10 million broker options on the same terms and a 4% capital-raising fee.

December quarter turns study growth into execution test

WGR plans to advance alternative processing pathways, continue resource growth at Eagle, Emu, Joyners Find and Gold King South, and maintain engagement with native title and heritage partners. It is also considering corporate opportunities and pursuing potential divestment of its Sweden project package, which is outside its stated focus on gold in Western Australia.

The expanded study improves the scale and geological confidence of Gold Duke on paper. The next test is more concrete: whether WGR can convert that larger production case into a permitted, financed and processed mining operation before its reported cash runway becomes the more immediate constraint.

Bottom Line?

Gold Duke is larger and better defined, but the investment case now depends on securing processing and extending funding before development spending accelerates.

Questions in the middle?

  • Can WGR secure a binding alternative processing arrangement if Wiluna’s third-party tolling remains deferred?
  • Will shareholder approval of the lender and broker options provide enough financing runway for Gold Duke’s next development phase?
  • How much of the expanded Production Target can be converted into an executable mine plan without further capital or schedule changes?
