Elk Range’s maiden Friday hole opens a deeper gold zone

Mining By Maxwell Dee 5 min read

Elk Range Mining’s maiden drill hole at the Friday Gold Project returned 290.3 metres at 2.8 g/t gold, including 89.6 metres at 5.5 g/t. The ASX-listed explorer is now advancing its second and third holes, with A$7.19 million in cash and further assays due late November.

  • 290.3m at 2.8 g/t gold from 18.7m in maiden hole 26FRD001
  • 89.6m at 5.5 g/t, including 11.3m at 21.4 g/t
  • Mineralisation extended about 170m below historical hole depth
  • A$7.19m cash and no debt at 30 September
  • Assays from holes 26FRD002 and 26FRD003 expected in late November

Maiden hole extends Friday mineralisation

Elk Range Mining Limited (ASX:ELK) has received an emphatic first assay result from its newly listed Friday Gold Project, with maiden hole 26FRD001 intersecting 290.3 metres at 2.8 g/t gold from 18.7 metres. The interval included 89.6 metres at 5.5 g/t, with higher-grade zones of 37.1 metres at 8.3 g/t and 11.3 metres at 21.4 g/t.

The result matters as much for where the mineralisation continues as for the headline grade. Historical hole PFR2014_06 ended at 137.16 metres, while 26FRD001 returned 11.3 metres at 21.4 g/t immediately below that depth and continued to intersect mineralisation down to 308.9 metres. Elk Range says this extends the mineralised system approximately 170 metres below the historical hole’s end, although all reported intervals are downhole lengths and true widths have not yet been estimated.

The result gives laboratory weight to the earlier first visible-gold observations, which were logged in a tightly confined interval during drilling. Assays from 122.38 metres to 122.68 metres returned 268.4 g/t gold, while a separate visible-gold veinlet at about 233.8 metres returned 0.39 metres at 120.0 g/t.

Drilling moves to the next test holes

Elk Range completed 26FRD001 at 336.8 metres and has moved onto the second drill pad. Hole 26FRD002 reached about 151 metres before mechanical issues paused the work, while 26FRD003 had reached roughly 125 metres by 27 October. Drilling on 26FRD002 is expected to resume after 26FRD003 is complete.

The campaign began just days after the company’s ASX debut and forms part of an approximately 2,850-metre, eight-hole Phase 1 programme. Its stated objectives are to validate historical high-grade mineralisation, fill gaps for a future JORC Mineral Resource and test the system at depth and along strike. That programme was introduced in the company’s maiden Friday drilling campaign, which targeted both historical mineralisation and resource-definition work.

Cash funds the next phase, but exploration remains early

Elk Range ended September with A$7.19 million in cash, A$7.36 million including refundable security deposits, and no debt after completing its A$10 million IPO at A$0.20 a share. The quarter included A$1.56 million of one-off costs, mainly associated with the IPO and listing, alongside A$0.59 million of exploration expenditure.

Using the quarter’s relevant operating and exploration outflows, the Appendix 5B reports an estimated 3.3 quarters of funding. That figure reflects an early period containing substantial listing costs, and the company says exploration is expected to become the largest use of funds as round-the-clock drilling continues. The immediate test is therefore geological rather than financial: whether the first hole’s result is repeated across the remaining Phase 1 programme.

November assays are the next evidence point

Elk Range expects assay results from 26FRD002 and 26FRD003 in late November, while PhotonAssay results remain pending for the approximately 113-metre historically mineralised interval in PFR2014_06. Those modern re-assays are intended to provide a comparison with earlier fire-assay results generated by a previous operator.

The neighbouring Elk City projects have also attracted a proposed US$60 million earn-in from Agnico Eagle through Scout Discoveries, but Elk Range is not party to that transaction and cautions that mineralisation on adjoining ground is not necessarily indicative of its own projects. For Friday, the more decisive question is closer to home: whether the strong first intersection represents a broader, repeatable system that can support a JORC-compliant resource.

Bottom Line?

The first hole has materially strengthened the Friday exploration story, but repeatability, true widths and the pending modern checks on historical drilling remain unresolved.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will holes 26FRD002 and 26FRD003 reproduce the long, high-grade mineralised intervals seen in 26FRD001?
  • What will PhotonAssay show when the historically mineralised PFR2014_06 interval is re-tested?
  • How quickly will the company’s cash position change as 24-hour drilling and any follow-up programme expand?
