Riedel reaches the drilling phase after building a three-project gold portfolio

Mining By Maxwell Dee 5 min read

Riedel Resources has completed its transformation into a three-project gold explorer and is preparing to drill Cosmo in Western Australia for the first time since the 1990s. The company ended September with A$3.4 million in cash after a A$2.7 million equity raise, but its projected funding period is based on spending before the main drilling campaign begins.

  • Maiden Cosmo reconnaissance drilling scheduled for late October
  • 1,100-sample soil program underway across 580km² of ground
  • A$3.4 million cash balance after A$2.7 million equity raise
  • Sarama Resources holds an initial stake of about 32%
  • Marymia East interest converted into a 2% net smelter return royalty

Cosmo drilling becomes the immediate test

Riedel Resources Limited (ASX:RIE) is moving from portfolio assembly to field execution, with maiden reconnaissance drilling at its 580km² Cosmo Project scheduled to begin in late October. The program will be the first drilling at Cosmo since the 1990s and is aimed at several kilometre-scale gold-in-soil anomalies in Western Australia’s Laverton Gold District.

The company has already started a regional soil geochemistry program involving about 1,100 samples, following Aboriginal cultural heritage clearance. The work covers both largely unexplored ground and areas where earlier sampling identified anomalies extending in aggregate for 45km along strike, with some footprints up to 1.8km wide. Riedel said the sampling is intended to refine drill targets, rather than representing a resource estimate or discovery.

The campaign builds on the 1,100-sample Cosmo survey, which had already targeted unexplored ground and existing gold anomalies ahead of October drilling. Riedel is also advancing drill designs, sampling protocols, contractor tenders, access tracks and field support arrangements. Results from the drilling, when available, will provide the first meaningful test of whether the broad surface geochemistry translates into subsurface mineralisation.

Laverton acquisition reshapes Riedel

During the quarter, Riedel completed its Cosmo and Mt Venn acquisition, taking control of two projects covering roughly 1,000km² and adding them to the Kingman Gold Project in Arizona. Riedel holds an 80% interest across most of the Cosmo and Mt Venn tenements, with some variations by licence, while Sarama Resources remains a cornerstone shareholder with an initial interest of about 32% in Riedel.

The transaction consideration included 150 million Riedel shares and 100 million performance rights issued to Sarama. The rights include milestones linked to drilling intersections, progressively larger mineral resource estimates and a Riedel share price VWAP of at least A$0.075 for 15 consecutive trading days. Those securities add a potential future share count alongside the 40 million performance rights issued to employees and directors under the company’s long-term incentive plan.

At Mt Venn, Riedel has completed a litho-structural interpretation of geophysical data across the 420km² project and identified preliminary focus areas involving shear zones, banded iron formations, folded mafic intrusives and layered mafic-ultramafic complexes. Further desktop work is required before those areas become formal targets. At Kingman, the company is planning orientation and regional soil surveys across ground it says remains largely untouched by modern exploration, while reviewing the historical database around its existing Inferred Resource of 64,000 ounces of gold and 689,000 ounces of silver.

Cash supports exploration, but spending is set to rise

Riedel ended the quarter with A$3.377 million in cash, helped by A$1.463 million of equity proceeds received during the period. The quarter’s net operating and investing outflows totalled A$358,000, while the Appendix 5B calculation estimated 10.7 quarters of funding based on relevant quarterly outgoings of A$317,000.

That calculation should be treated as a starting point rather than a fixed timetable. The company’s upcoming drilling and expanded exploration programs are not reflected in a quarter dominated by relatively modest exploration expenditure, and field activity can change the rate at which cash is consumed. Riedel also relinquished its direct exposure to Marymia East after its interest fell below 10%, with that position converting into a 2% net smelter return royalty following about A$6 million of cumulative exploration expenditure by Norwest Minerals.

Bottom Line?

Cosmo drilling is the next hard datapoint for a company whose strategy has expanded faster than its exploration track record. The key financial question is how quickly the A$3.4 million cash balance changes once all three project pipelines move from planning into fieldwork.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will Cosmo’s kilometre-scale soil anomalies produce meaningful gold intersections in the maiden drilling campaign?
  • How much will drilling and expanded exploration accelerate Riedel’s quarterly cash outflows?
  • Will Riedel exercise its option over Cosmo Gold’s remaining interest before its early December 2026 expiry?
