A$156,000 cash and 11,337 ounces headline Rokeby’s September quarter

Rokeby Resources has completed its maiden Sunnyside drilling program and reported high-grade gold intercepts alongside an 11,337-ounce Inferred resource at Powers Gully. The exploration progress comes with just A$156,000 in cash, forcing a review of costs and funding options.

  • 0.45 metres at 29.2g/t gold from Sunnyside drilling
  • Nine-hole, 2,180-metre diamond program completed
  • Powers Gully resource of 11,337 ounces at 5.29g/t
  • A$156,000 cash balance and 0.19 quarters of funding
  • New management team and planned cost reductions

High-grade Sunnyside drilling reaches its funding test

Rokeby Resources Limited (ASX:RKB) has finished its nine-hole, 2,180-metre diamond drilling campaign at Sunnyside, but the more immediate investor question is how the company funds the next stage. Rokeby ended the September quarter with A$156,000 in cash and reported estimated funding of just 0.19 quarters based on its quarterly operating outflows.

The drilling itself delivered encouraging early results. Hole 26SSDH001 returned 0.45 metres at 29.2 grams per tonne gold from 122.05 metres, within a broader 4.95-metre interval grading 4.48g/t. Hole 26SSDH002 returned 0.5 metres at 5.17g/t from 120.5 metres. Results had been received for the first six holes, with further assays still pending. The company said the results support the expected orientation of mineralisation while also pointing to a previously unrecognised east-west trending zone, suggesting a more structurally complex system.

The program was designed to improve confidence in the geological model and support a JORC 2012 resource update. Rokeby had previously reported that its maiden Sunnyside drilling campaign was targeting the historical high-grade zones. One caution is embedded in the latest results: hole 26SSDH003 lost core, leaving the interval expected to contain the highest grades incompletely sampled.

Powers Gully adds 11,337 ounces at Inferred confidence

Rokeby also reported a maiden JORC 2012 Inferred Mineral Resource for the Powers Gully surface stockpile of 66,565 tonnes at 5.29g/t gold, containing 11,337 ounces. The stockpile sits at surface and is expected to be excavated in bulk without drilling or blasting, giving the company a potentially lower-capital development pathway than underground hard-rock mining.

That opportunity remains preliminary. The estimate is based on 35 shallow auger holes, variable drill spacing, assumed rather than measured density and limited historical quality-control data. A 98% gold recovery result came from one sample using cyanide leaching with caustic soda pre-treatment; Rokeby expressly said that result should not be assumed to apply across the whole stockpile. Further bulk metallurgical testing is planned. The broader work program covers Wardens Mine, Yellow Girl and Maude, where an earlier filing defined a Maude tailings resource.

A strategic reset arrives with limited cash

Rokeby paid A$2.55 million during the quarter to complete the acquisition of the Mt Wills and Cassilis projects, with total cash payments for tenements reported at A$2.42 million in the Appendix 5B. Operating cash outflows were A$811,000, including A$491,000 for exploration and evaluation, A$304,000 in staff costs and A$19,000 in administration and corporate costs.

After quarter-end, Andrew Haythorpe became managing director, Ric Dawson joined as a non-executive director and Keith Bowker was appointed chief financial officer and company secretary. The company said it would reduce staff, administration and director costs, review funding alternatives and consider divesting, selling or joint-venturing non-core assets. No committed new financing was disclosed in the report, leaving the pending Sunnyside assays, the resource update and the next capital decision tightly connected.

Bottom Line?

Rokeby has generated the sort of grades that can keep an exploration story alive, but the next value test is financial as much as geological: pending assays and cost reductions must arrive before the cash balance does.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will the remaining Sunnyside assays support a meaningful JORC 2012 resource upgrade?
  • How much additional capital will Rokeby need to fund drilling, metallurgy and project studies?
  • Can Powers Gully and the other stockpiles demonstrate consistent recoveries and a viable small-scale processing pathway?
