Somerset finds more copper at Talisker as a 17km corridor awaits testing

Mining By Maxwell Dee 7 min read

Somerset Minerals has completed its first drill campaign at Talisker in Nunavut, uncovering high-grade copper-silver mineralisation and extending the interpreted system across about 1.6km. The exploration result is encouraging, but the company ended September with A$1.057 million in cash and reported funding coverage of just 0.35 quarters at its recent spending rate.

  • 14-hole, 2,170m maiden RC campaign at Talisker
  • 36.58m at 1.62% copper and 11.8g/t silver in TARC0003
  • Less than 10% of the 17km Talisker corridor has been drilled
  • A$1.17m entitlement and shortfall offer completed
  • A$1.057m cash at quarter end, with further funding likely required

Talisker drilling confirms copper-silver discovery

Somerset Minerals Ltd (ASX:SMM) has found a sizeable exploration target beneath glacial cover at Talisker, with its first 14 reverse-circulation holes producing broad copper-silver intersections and mineralisation extending across about 1.6km of strike. The result gives the company a new discovery to pursue within its 100%-owned Coppermine Project in Nunavut, Canada, although it remains an exploration result rather than a defined resource.

The strongest early results came from holes TARC0003 and TARC0008. TARC0003 returned 36.58m at 1.62% copper and 11.8g/t silver from 22.86m, including 9.14m at 4.39% copper and 28.8g/t silver. TARC0008 produced two substantial zones, including 38.1m at 1.27% copper and 7.4g/t silver, with a higher-grade interval of 3.05m at 6.32% copper and 42.7g/t silver.

Those results build on the Talisker maiden drilling, which previously confirmed thick copper-silver mineralisation in the central part of the 17km corridor. Subsequent assays extended the mineralised footprint, including 30.5m at 0.71% copper in TARC0010 and 18.3m at 0.66% copper in TARC0004. The final hole results added another notable intercept in TARC0014: 16.8m at 0.94% copper and 3.2g/t silver, including 7.6m at 1.92% copper.

Less than a tenth of the corridor has been tested

The scale of the remaining target is the central attraction. Somerset says less than 10% of the roughly 17km Talisker anomaly has been drilled, and the main undercover fault zone remains largely untested. The maiden campaign concentrated on a smaller parallel fault, while the larger blind zone to the west is now a primary target for follow-up work.

The company’s exploration model is supported by more than drilling. Final assays from 862 infill till samples produced a peak copper value of 1.74% at Skye, while five Talisker samples exceeded 0.5% copper. Laboratory copper results correlated with field pXRF readings at 0.97 across 200 samples, according to the report. Somerset also highlighted earlier high-grade Coppermine rock chips, including peak surface results of 46.3% copper at Skye and 36.4% copper at Talisker.

Somerset is planning a significantly larger Talisker program that is expected to include diamond drilling for structural and textural information, as well as first-pass drilling at the Skye and Jons Pit targets. The company says permits are in place for up to 100 holes, but the timing and final scale of the program have not yet been settled. The reported intercepts are downhole lengths, and true widths are not yet known.

Jura adds a second active copper front

Talisker is not the only Coppermine target advancing. Somerset completed reporting from its six-hole, 1,611m diamond campaign at Jura North, where earlier drilling included 5.2m at 2.23% copper and 18.8m at 1.21% copper. The final two holes included a more modest 2.3m at 0.59% copper, while the company says mineralisation remains open at depth and is using the structural information to refine targets along the approximately 7km Jura trend.

That exploration pipeline comes with a financing constraint. Somerset spent A$2.702 million on exploration and evaluation during the quarter, recorded A$321,000 of operating cash outflow, and ended September with A$1.057 million in cash. Its Appendix 5B calculates estimated funding coverage at 0.35 quarters based on the quarter’s relevant outgoings, and the company says it expects to consider additional capital raisings as required.

Capital raised while Ecuador assets remain in play

The company completed a 1-for-10 entitlement and shortfall offer during the quarter, raising about A$1.17 million before costs after the shortfall was fully subscribed. Combined with the A$2 million June placement, Somerset says about A$3.17 million was raised to fund the Talisker campaign, including the completed entitlement offer.

Somerset also reported a non-binding indicative proposal from Lundin Gold Inc. (TSX:LUG) to acquire its wholly owned Ecuadorian subsidiary, Condor Gold S.A., for US$5.25 million, or about A$7.5 million. The proposal is not binding and the report does not establish that a transaction will proceed. Separately, the company said an Ecuadorian tax dispute had been resolved in its favour, while its Blackdome-Elizabeth interests in British Columbia were divested during the quarter in exchange for a retained 0.5% net smelter royalty.

Bottom Line?

Talisker has supplied the discovery story, but the next chapter depends on whether Somerset can fund the larger drilling program without diluting shareholders before the corridor’s scale is properly tested.

Questions in the middle?

  • What will the larger Talisker program cost, and when will Somerset need to raise more capital?
  • Will diamond drilling establish true widths and structural continuity behind the RC intercepts?
  • Will Lundin Gold’s non-binding proposal for Condor Gold progress into a binding transaction?
