Emperor Energy has converted its rig arrangement into a binding full form contract, securing Valaris 107 for the Judith-2 appraisal well offshore Victoria in April 2027. The milestone reduces one immediate execution risk, but leaves further payments and the drilling outcome ahead.
- Binding contract for Valaris 107 jack-up rig
- April 2027 Judith-2 drilling schedule
- US$3.5 million paid and credited against contract value
- US$165,000 operating day rate
- NOPSEMA environmental approval secured
Binding rig contract secures April 2027 drilling window
Emperor Energy Limited (ASX:EMP) has signed the full form contract that turns its Judith-2 drilling plan from a rig reservation into a binding operational commitment. The agreement with Valaris subsidiary ENSCO Australia secures the VALARIS 107 jack-up rig for a minimum 30-day campaign at the Judith Gas Field in the offshore Gippsland Basin, targeted for April 2027.
The deal closes the main contractual step identified in the company’s rig term sheet, with Emperor paying a further US$2.0 million on execution. That follows the US$1.5 million paid when the earlier term sheet was signed in September, bringing payments to US$3.5 million. The amount is credited against the aggregate drilling contract value, which has not been disclosed.
US$165,000 daily rate and optional flow testing
Valaris 107 will operate at a day rate of US$165,000. The contract includes an optional 15-day period for flow testing after the minimum drilling term, giving Emperor a defined pathway to test the well beyond the initial appraisal campaign, although the announcement does not specify whether that option will be exercised.
The rig is already operating in the Gippsland Basin and is expected to complete existing commitments for other operators before moving to Judith-2. Further contract payments are due in 2027 before mobilisation, so the agreement secures access to the rig without eliminating the remaining funding and execution requirements attached to the campaign.
Environmental approval clears key well requirement
NOPSEMA approved the Judith-2 Drilling Environmental Plan in late September, a regulatory milestone that now sits alongside the binding rig contract. The approval was the subject of NOPSEMA Judith-2 approval, which reported that the well was intended to appraise a 166 Bcf contingent gas resource, while commercial conversion remained unproven.
The next evidence will come from execution rather than contracting: the timing of future payments, mobilisation in April, drilling performance and any flow-test results. The contract fixes an important part of the timetable, but it does not establish the well’s gas outcome or the commercial development case.
Bottom Line?
Emperor has secured the rig and environmental approval, but the investment case now moves toward funding the remaining commitments and proving what Judith-2 can deliver.
Questions in the middle?
- Can Emperor meet the further 2027 payments required before Valaris 107 mobilises?
- Will the rig arrive and commence the Judith-2 campaign on the targeted April 2027 schedule?
- Will drilling and any optional flow testing support commercial development of the Judith Gas Field?
