Fortuna uncovers deeper high-grade rutile at Kahuna

Fortuna Metals has reported multiple broad, high-grade rutile intersections beneath the current resource boundary at its Kahuna prospect in Malawi. The results leave mineralisation open along strike and at depth, with more than 2,700 samples still being processed.

  • 24m at 1.27% rutile among several 20m-plus intersections
  • High-grade core extends across roughly 1km of the Kahuna prospect
  • Mineralisation remains open north and south and below the current 8m resource limit
  • 7,618m aircore program completed across Mkanda
  • Further rutile, graphite and rare earth assays expected over four to six months

Kahuna drilling pushes below the resource boundary

Fortuna Metals Limited (ASX:FUN) has found a series of thick, high-grade rutile intervals below the shallow drilling envelope at Kahuna, strengthening the exploration case for its Mkanda project in Malawi. The first batch included 24 metres at 1.27% rutile, 24 metres at 1.22% and 24 metres at 1.12%, with five further intersections exceeding 1% rutile across widths of 18 to 22 metres.

The results come from vertical aircore holes drilled to an average depth of 22 metres, well below the roughly 8-metre depth underpinning Mkanda’s current approximately 300 million-tonne inferred Mineral Resource Estimate. The company said the results support its strategy of targeting high-grade cores identified by hand auger drilling and testing their continuity at depth.

The high-grade zone extends over about 1 kilometre within the roughly 2-kilometre Kahuna prospect, according to Fortuna, with mineralisation remaining open to the north and south. The latest results add to the company’s earlier deeper Mkanda drilling, which had also tested mineralisation beneath the shallow resource boundary.

Assay backlog becomes the next catalyst

Fortuna reported the intersections using a 0.5% rutile cut-off and no internal dilution or top cut. They are downhole lengths from vertical holes, so the release does not establish true widths, a revised resource estimate or the economic performance of the mineralisation.

That distinction matters because the company still has a substantial amount of testing ahead. High-priority aircore samples from the Agogo prospect are at the laboratory, alongside more than 2,700 samples from this year’s drilling. Fortuna expects a steady flow of rutile and graphite assays, with further results anticipated over the next four to six months; rare earth analysis is also being pursued across the multi-commodity program.

The broader 2026 campaign includes 7,618 metres of completed aircore drilling and 648 new hand auger holes at Mkanda. Results that demonstrate continuity across Kahuna and other prospects could feed into future resource work, but the current announcement remains an exploration update rather than a resource upgrade. The quality of the headline intersections will need to be matched by continuity, density and eventual metallurgical and economic studies.

Bottom Line?

Kahuna has delivered an encouraging depth extension, but the investment case now depends on whether pending assays turn isolated strong intersections into a continuous, classifiable resource.

Questions in the middle?

  • Will pending holes confirm that Kahuna’s high-grade core continues across the full prospect and at depth?
  • Can the new drilling support an increase in resource size or confidence rather than simply expand the exploration target?
  • What rutile, graphite and rare earth results will emerge from the more than 2,700-sample assay backlog?
